One further point: if Commons *did* want an election before 31 Oct it could legislate to cut the 5-week period, only brought in in 2013

... no one else is likelier to command a majority at that stage (in a vote of confidence Ian Austin, Kate Hoey &c might abstain), so May wd advise Queen to send for him...

All of the remaining candidates for the Tory leadership have promised to renegotiate the withdrawal agreement.

Great. So we already know that the next Tory leader will fail on their first day.
Will they resign? Probably not, but they should. They should resign the first day.

They will have got the job solely on the grounds of renegotiating a treaty which they then fail to renegotiate.

That is a resignation level failure. The failure of your prime policy.
Their failure to reopen the Article to negotiations will invite an immediate vote of no confidence, which they are very likely to lose, producing a general election within maybe a week of taking office.

To understand why, I need to outline 2 important mechanisms that most people, politicians and commentators seem to ignore, dismiss or simply don't get. They have different and somewhat opposite consequences, but are both decisive in the current & foreseeable predicaments.

1st and foremost: the biggest constraint that applies to political decision-making comes from the past decisions & policies.
It is a massive constraint.
Cameron COULD NOT convincingly campaign for #Remain, because his own policies CREATED the discontent channelled by #Leave.
