The SDF has been detaining tens of thousands of local families in an awful IDPs camp. Most are women & children. I know that Kurdish & Arab leaders of the SDF know that they’re innocent civilian, but they still hold them pending a process of release. Some escape through bribes.
I have close family members held there, and have been speaking to US and SDF officials on this for about a year.

The Assad regime expelled ISIS from one side of the river, but never built an IDP camp to process humans. It let them go to Damascus etc.
Journalists who go there to report often make the huge mistake of lumping those families with “ISIS families.” It’s well know that there are civilian families (locals) AND families of ISIS members/fighters. The latter are a minority.
Many suspect the IDP camp to hold civilians was an American idea, and they cite technology they use to ID individuals and create database for civilians. Again, there is a clear distinction between suspected ISIS members and their families, and civilians.
I’ve written about the positive things about the SDF, but I think the SDF A.S. a hopeful project is now on life support. The concept was a war concept and it hasn’t evolved into a governing body after the defeat of ISIS caliphate. It needs to.
