Court-ordered desegregation, along w increases in funding to high-poverty schools, were the most successful tools we have ever seen for closing both the test-score gap and the opportunity gap. The data on this is clear. Anyone arguing otherwise is doing so for political reasons.
The test-score gap reached its narrowest ever recorded during the peak of desegregation. And @ProfRucker has studied the life outcomes of black children who underwent desegregation and the results are astounding. Desegregated schools broke caste. basicbooks.com/titles/rucker-…
So every person who promotes this lie tht desegregation--often accomplished by busing--failed, is either ignorant of the data or willfully ignoring it. Desegregation as a moral act, as a public policy, did not fail. Our country's continuous pattern of folding to white racism did.

Tweeps, I again need some research help. I am looking for the names of reports, books, studies that pose black people as a problem. They can be 200 years old. They can be from last year. Please drop names, authors in replies. Much appreciated.
Let me be bit more specific. I am speaking only of black Americans. And I am looking for papers, books, that specifically call out black Americans as problematic, like books called "The Negro Problem" and "American Dilemma" and "The Negro Family: The Case For National Action"

I cannot stay on Twitter today because I have a draft due, but @esglaude and others PLEASE stop saying tht busing failed. Busing for school desegregation worked in many, many places. It helped move the South from complete apartheid to what remains the most integrated region of US
There are a host of examples of where busing succeeded, mostly in countywide districts where white people could not simply avoid integration by moving across an invisible municipal line to an all-white school district. Look at Charlotte before busing ended. Jefferson Co. Wake Co.
When given no escape hatch, many white people just dealt with it. And for all those white pundits who say they disliked busing bc it hurt black kids, please show me all the times you have voiced concern and advocated for black children stuck in segregated, under-resourced schools

I find it both revelatory & infuriating that people say school desegregation was hard and unpopular, as if attempting to break apart 350 years of racial apartheid was going to be smooth, painless and easy. With busing, we actually tried and it was HARD. But segregation was worse.
Busing for integration did not fail. We failed. The ONLY deseg plan that wouldn’t have stoked white resistance was the one that left racial caste largely intact. Busing was required bc of 150 yrs of housing policy that forcibly seg black people. We need to stop being delusional.
People keep pointing to a long bus ride as if that horror outweighs attending a grossly under-resources, failing school that would ensure you could never compete and change your circumstance. It makes no sense. And again, kids were ALREADY RIDING BUSES.

reading the comments from older white Democrats, you'd think that it was exclusively white children who were bused to predominantly black schools, when as nikole points out, it was the reverse.
the other piece of missing context is the fact that court-ordered desegregation came almost 20 years *after* Brown v. Board, in response to reluctant and recalcitrant school districts across the country
anyway, school integration is still unpopular, housing integration is even more unpopular (try to build a duplex in an affluent liberal white neighborhood), and we've basically spent the last 25 years trying to make plessy v. ferguson work, when it simply can't.

A thread on some of the things we learned about the Federal role in deseg in the 50s, 60s, 70s.

(Many have written on this; I summarize some of my own work here.)
Trends in segregation for districts in the former Confederacy

10 yrs after Brown (1964)
7% districts under Fed court supervision
26% districts had ANY black student in school with ANY white student
99% black students attended ALL-black sch

Where "leaving it to locals" got us
Note
-Dual system was illegal and courts were involved, so 1964 is not even pure "leave it to the locals" outcome
-There was somewhat more deseg in the Border region, but data are incomplete, so we focus on the former Confederacy in this work

With all the sudden interest in yearbooks, it's worth noting they've long been a tool used by #desegregation lawyers to uncover evidence of the “vestiges” of a school district's prior dual system. Here's a quick thread on my experience using HS yearbooks. 1/
As a DOJ civil rights lawyer (during early ‘00s) reviewing district compliance w/court-ordered deseg plans, I’d request all their yearbooks mainly to get a sense of whether extracurriculars/sports were still impacted by the district's segregative past. 2/
They too often did.

One district had never had a black cheerleader. Turns out they used a secretive selection process based on unknowable criteria that just happened to result in all-white squads year after year. You get the idea. 3/
