On hols in a Hebridean Croft with solar panels. Got me thinking, how can we increase install rates without the same FiT subsidy?
I know solar £ is down but I suspect not enough for households to be forking out £6k for 4kW system that may not payback in its lifetime

We’ll soon have smart export tariff but fixed tariffs we’ve seen already are around 5p/kWh - very similar to the export FiT tariff.

Some variable options out there. Unit cost may change in future but as it stands it’s FiT without the ‘guarantee tariff’.

So what to do? Battery EVs seem an obvious ally here by displacing a big chunk of your car’s fuel costs.
If you spend £200 month on petrol and can cover half of this from solar then payback is slashed to just a few years with savings of £1.2k pa.

Big problem is that you charge your car at night when the sun is famously shy. Big sticking point. Unless you have a bank of batteries at home or two cars with one at home you’re struggling.
Feels a solution could be to use whatever you generate at home whilst you’re out as ‘credit’ for charging your car whilst out. That maybe through your own support or a direct arrangement with your employer.
Other opportunities with vehicle to grid tech where if you travel to work without your car then it can work as asset at home, balancing demand/supply, subsidising your travel costs via bus,train etc.
It’s also fully charged for evenings & wknds.

Feels like we should be encouraging people to buy both together if we want to eat into domestic & transport emissions.
Obvs prob of it being a regressive subsidy as it champions homeowners with driveways. FiT was always labelled a middle class subsidy.

Summary - as soon as folk see solar as a way of slashing their fuel bills they’ll want them, with or without subsidy. Heavy drivers could save thousands.
