It’s almost like contemporary white evangelism is a proxy for white supremacist ideology defined by hyper-partisanship, a hated of women and LGBTQ, antisemitic End Times zionism, and petty white grievance politics and not a carefully-considered, coherent theological worldview.
Everytime a poll comes out showing most white evangelicals are anti-immigrant MAGA assholes people respond w/ “but but Jesus wouldnt have...” & it drives me mad, it’s not an organic religious worldview arrived out by pouring over scripture. It’s a cultural proxy for the GOP base.
When I attended Hagee’s church as a kid in San Antonio there were only 10 topics:

Israel/End Times
Homosexual plots to recruit kids
Israel/End Times
Israel/End Times
Homosexuals
Clinton/UN as antichrist
Women being useless whores
Atheist professors
Israel/End Times
Homosexuals
There’s no theological basis for focusing on these otherwise obscure topics so much, they’re just religious-themed cultural thingamajigs used to sew paranoia, racism and hatred of liberalism and women

Shreveport, LA just repealed its extremely racist 12yo law banning saggy pants after police shot a black man in Feb who ran while being stopped for wearing saggy pants.

The man was allegedly armed & after being shot 8 times by police, allegedly shot himself (?). Normal country.
*shot AT 8 times, only three actually hit him just to clarify

Reminds me of how the NYT editorial board the day after the ‘02 Venezuela coup justified their endorsement of it by saying Chavez killed protestors, then two weeks later—after Chavez had been reinstated—the NYT quietly reported the snipers who fired first were from the opposition
Like all war fervors the reporting on Venezuela has been hysterical and in sync w/ pro-US NatSec orthodoxy. Reporters largely see themselves as advocates for the opposition while everything the govt does is rounded up to the most ungenerous and cartoonishly evil reading of events

This doesn't work in a crisis. In the Reagan/Bush years I was getting arrested in protests because my friends--men your age and younger--were dying.
My activism and that of other ACT-UP, Queer Nation and Lavender Menace people like me didn' t allow for politeness. So...no.

In August 2018 Jim Sheridan a Labour Councillor was reported to the Labour Party for #Antisemitic comments. Sheridan stated that he had lost respect and empathy for the Jewish community.
I am not going to defend his statement. It appears to have been used in frustration at what he perceived to be unwarranted levels of #Antisemitic allegations against the #LabourParty Jim Sheridan has since apologised and been reinstated with a warning.
But what was behind his frustration? Why would someone who stated he had supported the Jewish Community all his adult life, suddenly say he had lost empathy for them? Perhaps we should look at the broader picture?

But next month @UMChurch will make a decision with far reaching implications and I feel compelled to comment.

In January 2017 the General Conference of the United Methodist Church appointed a 32 member body called the 'Commission on a Way Forward' to examine the church's official policies regarding the $LGBTQ community.

The Commission studied the issue for a year.

In March of 2018 they issued their findings. Their report was made public and handed over last year to the Council of Bishops for examination who spent weeks examining and considering its content.
