Truly bizarre decision by House leadership to go easy on Trump while declaring open warfare on caucus members who are advocating more aggressive accountability against Trump.
The attack itself is lame but the message it sends to the caucus is that attacks on @AOC and others won’t just be tolerated - they’re actively encouraged. Especially combined with the recent media offensive.

Even if or when the tweet gets deleted, the message has been sent.
For leadership, being criticized by your caucus is part of the job description. Every leader experiences it - Senator Reid was no stranger. Cruz called McConnell a liar on the floor! But responding to it by declaring open warfare on your own caucus is a... questionable decision.
This is a huge mistake. Even rebuking Jeffries later won’t alter the message sent to members. Doing a media tour bashing your members squanders your credibility to tell others to stop. Now leadership has no standing to forge unity. What a total mess.

Exactly this. The irony of data journalism is that it was founded to help separate the signal from the noise, but now every outlet has to have one and the net effect is to flood the debate with more noise than signal.
A piece about presidential elections that declares 4 of the last 5 outliers and instead privileges a study of Congressional elections and the one election where the FBI director dropped a bomb a week out points readers to the noise, not the signal. cnn.com/2019/07/12/pol…

On the debt ceiling vote Senate Dems could force Republicans to find the votes themselves or make concessions- like no more kids in cages. Rs have 53 votes. It’d be perfectly responsible for Dems to to tell McConnell: we won’t filibuster but you have to find the votes to pass it.
The last time the debt ceiling was raised, 16 Senate Republicans voted against it. Maybe they could find the votes to pass it themselves now. But maybe not. If not, House Dems would have enormous leverage to force the Senate to accept a bill they could pass with only Dem votes.
Senate Dems would not have to block a debt ceiling increase. They could provide consent to skip the filibuster on a clean increase & let it come to the floor for a final passage (simple majority)vote. But they could withhold their votes on passage, forcing Rs to do it themselves.

Democratic leaders in the House and Senate let so many opportunities pass by and squandered so much leverage on the border bill, the only reasonable conclusion is that Schumer and Pelosi decided it was better to let it pass and move on - instead of putting up a fight.
Senate Democrats could have filibustered. They didn’t. They could have kept Dem yay votes to a minimum. They didn’t. Schumer had to know that letting McConnell run up the score to 88 would encourage House Dems to revolt & increase pressure on the House to accept the Senate bill.
Senate failures aside, Dems control the House. When Rs controlled it, they’d often counter a bipartisan Senate bill with a House bill that passed on party lines. Boehner would say words to the effect of, “we’re co-equal chambers. ” Press would put the bills on equivalent footing.

1/ Some thoughts on big companies about something I believe.

Nearly everything that happens in a big company happens with a battle, dissent, even name calling—the very best and worst with no correlation between the volume of (let’s call it) chair throwing and quality of outcome.
2/ When things are going well (financially, customers, etc), stringing together any set of chair throwing points can look like a mastermind of a strategy. There was a battle, clearer heads prevailed, and then a strong decision was made. #leadership #strategy #execution
3/ When things are not going well, stringing together any set of chair throwing points looks like, well, chair throwing. It looks like infighting, juvenile, power plays. Connecting chair throwing incidents makes the whole company look like clown town.
