Exactly this. The irony of data journalism is that it was founded to help separate the signal from the noise, but now every outlet has to have one and the net effect is to flood the debate with more noise than signal.
A piece about presidential elections that declares 4 of the last 5 outliers and instead privileges a study of Congressional elections and the one election where the FBI director dropped a bomb a week out points readers to the noise, not the signal. cnn.com/2019/07/12/pol…
