This entire piece is completely undone by the fact that the only Democrat to be elected POTUS this century was “seen as very liberal,” which is buried at the end as a tossed-off “to be sure.” In 2008 the “very liberal” Obama won 365 electoral votes. cnn.com/2019/07/12/pol… 
Exactly this. The irony of data journalism is that it was founded to help separate the signal from the noise, but now every outlet has to have one and the net effect is to flood the debate with more noise than signal.
A piece about presidential elections that declares 4 of the last 5 outliers and instead privileges a study of Congressional elections and the one election where the FBI director dropped a bomb a week out points readers to the noise, not the signal. cnn.com/2019/07/12/pol…
