I haven’t been able to shake the image of @VP Mike Pence, who built his political brand on the Christian faith, standing in front of a human kennel with hundreds of men, & looking away without the slightest hint of Christ-like empathy. So I drew something.

This image is based on Matthew 25:31-46, which became my favorite passage as an evangelical teen reading the New Testament for the first time—and ultimately disillusioned me with the evangelical world that seemed concerned about everything but what Jesus said in that passage.
In it, Jesus tells his disciples that whenever they give food to the hungry, water to the thirsty, clothes to the naked, refuge to the stranger (immigrant), or visit someone in prison, they are doing it for him, too.

But he also says: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.”

How can you practice this faith without understanding this core message?
Men like Mike Pence center their faith on disdain for empowered women, LGBT people & marginalized people of color who speak against injustice.

But they can’t even recognize Jesus when they see him—often because he comes in the form of those whose humanity they do not recognize.
BTW: Drawing isn’t really a thing I do. So excuse the art, art people. It’s just the only medium I could think of to express this.
