Good morning. Bijan Kian's trial gets underway in USDC EDVA today. Kian is accused of working as an agent of the Turkish government. Prosecutors say Kian acted on directions from Turkey when he convinced Michael Flynn to write an op-ed slamming Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen.
Recall, Gulen has lived in the US for years in political exile. Turkish President Recep Erdogan blames Gulen for a failed coup against him in 2016.
Reminder: The Eastern District of Virginia courthouse does not allow cameras or cell phones, so no live-tweeting, but I'll post updates here when possible.

Mueller probe witness George Aref Nader will face new sex trafficking and child pornography charges at the federal court in Va. today, h/t to @ErinBanco.

Confirmed - Nader pleaded not guilty to charges of transporting child pornography and transporting a 14 y/o boy. His trial is set for Sept 30 at the USDC Eastern District of Virginia.

Update on Bijan Rafiekian (aka Bijan Kian) trial here in EDVA. Prosecutors have rested their case, no more witnesses will be called. The defense will introduce their case soon and will ask for a motion to dismiss citing lack of evidence, reasonable doubt.

Prosecutors asked Judge Trenga to hold off on a ruling until after the jury renders a verdict. He is considering that now on a short recess. This request indicates the govt is worried Trenga is leaning toward tossing the case. If he does, then govt will almost certainly appeal.
Update: Judge Trenga said there are "very substantial issues" with elements of both counts against Kian and things were "very circumstantial and speculative" but "there is evidence," he said and the court will allow the case to proceed.

At the Kian trial this a.m., we heard testimony from Jim Courtovich, a partner of Sphere Consulting, the company Flynn Intel Group hired to compile a video that they initially said would help private investors better understand why the coup in Turkey happened/Gulen's alleged role
Courtovich said of his first mtg with Ekim Alptekin - the Dutch-Turkish biz man who prosecutors say paid FIG $600K - Ekim was deeply disappointed with what Sphere had done so far. He was expecting Olivia Pope (of the TV show Scandal) Courtovich said.
Ekim told him: "I'm expecting investigations, congressional hearings, stories in the press. I'm getting none of this."
Courtovich said he "almost fell out of his chair."
The scope of the project FIG initially pitched had apparently changed drastically, he explained.

1. I took a look at the now restored account @ AzadiRojava. Clear to me the reason the account was suspended was why they suspended me in January 2018: Because the account reported on #AfrinWarCrimes. The time may have come to take @TwitterSupport to federal court with Turkey
2. to impose the full 9/11 liability on the company, its management and the Turkish state. The people committing war crimes in #Afrin are mix of genocidal Turkish #GreyWolfs , #ISIS and Al-#Qaeda. Two of these group are listed and can form the basis for 18 USC 2333 suits.
3. The goal would be to impose a receivership over @Twitter and its assets and divest the Saudi jihadists of any ownership interests. @FBISanFrancisco @FBIWFO should consider @TwitterSupport an unregistered agent of the Turkish government and the now proven ISIS affiliate MIT.

2) Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MİT), led by a pro-Iranian Islamist figure Hakan Fidan, delivered hundreds of thousands of dollars to the al-Shabab terrorist organization in Somalia through a former Gitmo detainee.
3) The transfer of the funds was picked up by the US government, which alerted Turkish authorities and asked for an investigation into the network that enabled the funding of al-Shabab.
