This is incredibly gross, and getting common. This is a defense not merely of the content of Omar’s *definitionally* antisemitic statement but also an assertion that the criticism was a deliberate smear job by Jews pretending to be offended.
If you’re on twitter you see this a lot these days. The hivemind on here tends to coalesce around the same trendy terms at a time, so right now it’s moved from “you’re grasping at straws” to “you’re reaching”—a nearly identical way of saying Jews are going looking to smear ppl.
It’s not “hm, I don’t see it that way but I don’t have your personal experience with this.” It’s not even “you’re oversensitive.” It’s you’re acting in bad faith. The degree to which this makes public discussion around issues of ethnic discrimination more toxic is obvious.
But what’s particularly noxious about the tweet that began this thread is that it’s being used to erase Omar’s bigotry from the record. If ppl will do this for a tweet that literally accused moneyed Jews of buying politicians and of dual loyalty, they will do it for *everything.*
So that’s what’s happening. The question for our friends on the left is: What, specifically, are you doing to stop and reverse this trend? I hope folks have an answer.
One more thing: this accusation of bad faith was made from the beginning against Jewish conservatives, and Jews on the left *who later admitted to agreeing with us* stayed silent, not just about Omar but about the attacks on their fellow Jews.
Many of us have stepped up to defend Jews on the left from unfair attacks. That was not reciprocated. I don’t think my fellow Jews really understand just how much ill will this generated. I have never been filled with such pessimism for the American Jewish community.
That moment, when our brothers and sister stood silent even though *they knew we were being attacked unfairly* was a moment I don’t know if US Jewry will ever come back from. Because it revealed that they don’t actually think of us as their brothers and sisters.
I won’t belabor the point, but that’s where we stand. The only thing I want to hear from my friends on the left on this is what they plan to do about it. Anything else is an attempt to change the subject. /fin
