We’re driving thousands of species closer to extinction. That’s the warning from @IUCN – it published a report today that reveals more than 28,000 species are being pushed to extinction by human activity. Read the @NewScientist report here newscientist.com/article/221043…
The latest @IUCNredlist lists 28,338 species worldwide that are threatened with extinction, due to factors such as habitat loss, unsustainable fishing and hunting iucn.org/news/species/2…
This includes the critically endangered roloway monkey. There are now thought to be just 2000 surviving species in the Ivory Coast and Ghana, where they are endemic (📷 Russell A. Mittermeier) 
It also includes guitarfishes, a member of a family of fish collectively known as rhino rays. All but one of the 16 assessed species are now critically endangered due to “increasingly intense and unregulated coastal fishing”, @IUCN warns (📷Matt Potenski CC BY 2.0)
