1. Boris Johnson who has dreamt of this job for years is about to find out if he is really up to it - some of his backers have pretty intense fixation on the power of his belief and conviction to inspire people in this nightmare scenario
2. But don't kid yourself - a lot of MPs backed him because they reckon he's the only person who can really own the mess the party has made of Brexit - 'he's the last grenade we have left in the pouch' one says, others on his side describe his main policy as 'fantasy'
3. We'll hear a call from him for Tories to pull together today if he wins - the size of the mandate will have an impact on the sense of his authority: 60 - 40 reckoned by allies to be a decent result
4. Remember tho, no one will know until minutes before the result - Charles Walker and Cheryl Gillan will be the first Tories to see the result when they open the envelope from the independent vote counters - they will tell the candidates then moments after tell the rest of us
5. Remember too there was a lot of anecdotal evidence during the campaign of undecideds moving to Jeremy Hunt - never these days rule out a huge upset!
6. Last thought for now....in big picture, today is likely to be the day Brexiteers take control of govt, losing the 'if only' defence of their project.. Johnson's backers believe this is why he, and only he can get this done - he'll inherit a pretty toxic political landscape
