this is the sort of little bias that corrupts so much of journalism. trying to “appear” unbiased with the framing of him “testifying” IS a bias. It’s a bias against the obvious truth - that he’s lying his ass off - in favor of a specific group’s favored narrative
Racists don’t want you to say they’re racists, and liars don’t want you to say they’re lying. You don’t have to say they’re not racist or not liars for their preferred bias to win. You simply have to NOT call them racists or liars. But that’s what the truth requires to win out
For way too long we’ve allowed bias to be defined as “not saying uncomfortable things about the powerful.” No such stipulation, of course, exists for the powerless. The history of our profession is littered with examples of black and brown people being cast as criminals ...
Or addicts, or troubled, or other. There’s so many examples, we’re drowning in them.
But those on top? We take such great pains to protect the image they demand - despite all evidence to the contrary - is the one we should portray. It’s a perversion of the notion of unbiased
If you’re a racist, you’re a racist. A liar? Well you’re a liar. A shitty white nationalist apologist with a weird voice and an artificially inflated ego? Well, yes, you’re Ben Shapiro. These are facts. Just like vote tallies in Congress. There’s NO reason to not state them.
And there’s millions of reasons to say them. It’s an annoying old saw, but it’s true: sunlight is the best disinfectant. Calling them by their names will either weaken them or force them into the open where we, as a society, can fight their evil bullshit full force.
This is the literal definition of speaking truth to power. Which is one of the foundational principles of journalism.
