This one paper on the economic impact of the complete melting of Greenland Ice Sheet perfectly demonstrates the inadequacy of the social cost of carbon estimate, & more generally conventional economic models, to estimate climate damages. pnas.org/content/116/25…
This is a good study that can be done within the bounds of the DICE model. But it is a bit ludicrous to treat large-scale changes to the earth system as a stand-alone event. Here's one example: potential impacts to ocean circulation. eos.org/research-spotl…
There's also sea-level rise impacts. Cascading & potentially non-linear effects can affect human populations in the near term. You don't have to wait for the entire ice sheet to melt (which is why the impact on SCC is low even under low discount rates). independent.co.uk/environment/gr…
Tbf to the author, these issues are mentioned as a footnote. But as someone with such name recognition & authority, it is unacceptable to emphasize a result that is most likely to be wrong or very limited. People only read headlines & this is red meat to climate deniers.
If you want to know what your city (U.S. focused) will look like under 5 or 10 m of sea level rise, here's data you can explore: ss2.climatecentral.org/#10/40.7322/-7… Really cool work from @ClimateCentral.
