Consider this exhibit 352 undermining the hogwash idea that Trumpist racism "came out of nowhere" and took over what was an otherwise colorblind GOP.
The point is not that everyone at CPAC agreed with this vile crap. The point is, if you thought it was vile crap, why did you invite them to your gathering...again and again? The organizers had free will to define the boundaries of "conservatism." They decided this crap was ok.

1. 17 years ago Trent Lott (R-MS) said this about his state: "When Strom Thurmond ran for president [in 1948], we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either.''
2. Within a few weeks he had lost his job as the Senate Majority Leader (thanks in great part to pressure from within his own GOP) and his once promising political career was basically ended. theguardian.com/world/2002/dec…
3. This episode gave a lot of people the false impression, I think, that the GOP was authentically coming to grips with its longtime complicity with racism. Trent Lott did a glaring racism, and he suffered the consequences. So we're good now, right? Well....

There are murderers, like the El Paso guy, who explicitly say "here are my politics that explain why I'm doing this murdering." And then there are murderers, like the Dayton guy, who leave behind no evidence linking their politics to their murdering. It's not that hard people.
At this point, the politics that seemed to motivate the Dayton shooter were the politics of misogyny, a politics that is more prevalent on the far right but is not limited to it. thecut.com/2019/08/dayton…
