One of the more pernicious ideas permeating policy discussions is the notion that because Policy X won't completely solve Problem Y, there's no point in doing it.
You see this all the time in gun policy discussions.
"Shutting down 8chan wouldn't have stopped the shooter."
"A background check wouldn't have stopped the shooter."
"An assault weapons ban wouldn't have stopped the shooter."
But: you do all of those things together and you are pretty much guaranteed to see things start to change. Policymaking isn't about magic bullets and "fixes", it's an ongoing process of incremental change and improvement.
