One of the more pernicious ideas permeating policy discussions is the notion that because Policy X won't completely solve Problem Y, there's no point in doing it.
You see this all the time in gun policy discussions.
"Shutting down 8chan wouldn't have stopped the shooter."
"A background check wouldn't have stopped the shooter."
"An assault weapons ban wouldn't have stopped the shooter."
But: you do all of those things together and you are pretty much guaranteed to see things start to change. Policymaking isn't about magic bullets and "fixes", it's an ongoing process of incremental change and improvement.

A year ago, I attended the React Europe conference in Paris. I booked an Airbnb well ahead of time, but the host canceled shortly afterward because he hadn't bothered to arrange a place for himself while I was at his flat. Fortunately, I had a month to find a replacement Airbnb.
Fast forward to this year. Planning to attend React Europe again, I booked an Airbnb on the 17th of February for my stay from 21-26 May. That is, I booked my Airbnb *three months* in advance of the conference. Any guesses where this is going?

I've been hearing a lot of resignation in people's voices and tweets, in the face of the latest tragedy at #PowaySynagogueShooting. People are giving up hope that we can ever bend the curve on our #gunviolence epidemic.

6 years ago, we watched those babies walk out of #SandyHook - & were torn apart, as a nation, by the memory of those who didn't make it.

Many of us had been told that we "couldn't" talk about guns.

But after Sandy Hook, many of us said "no more; we will not be silent."
A few bravely started talking and writing about why #gunviolence was a #publichealth issue. Those few, turned into a wave. The groundwork was slowly laid.

CS Security types: FYI, Language-theoretic Security (aka the stuff discussed on langsec.org ) is one of the more important ideas in security you might not know about. Core idea: most security bugs are parsing or unparsing bugs. 1/
Whenever your software accepts inputs, it is parsing a language, even if you don't think of it as doing that. Parsing is one of the better understood parts of computer science, but most programs use ad hoc, "shotgun" parsers to deal with things they read. 2/
If you're trying to parse a complicated, context free or context sensitive language (and data formats are languages in the CS sense) but you're using ad hoc methods instead of principled ones to parse things, you're using a "shotgun parser". 3/

I'm seeing a lot of people object with the following argument:

1. Hickey has problem X with type system A
2. Type system B doesn't have X
=> Hickey is wrong about static typing.

This is a really common, and IMO poor, argument.
This equates "static typing" with "the best parts of every existing type system, with none of the downsides." It's assuming you can pick and choose your favorite bits of every type system for your project. In reality, you have to pick _one_.
Example: Hickey's "a -> maybe a" example is a problem in Haskell. Several people have argued it's NOT a problem in Typescript.

His "type of reverse" example is a problem in Typescript, but much less of one in Haskell.

Me : #facepalm. Learn to read between the lines. Amazon is going after the whole ERP / SCM space circa 2020. This is just signalling to the market.
X : I don't see why, this is just databases.
Me : #facepalm. Try launching cloud services in a space when your competitors can say "you don't even use your service, you rely on our products" ... Amazon thinks way ahead, it's in for the long haul, this was always coming.
X : Do you think we will see a decline of Oracle?
Me : No, not yet. They'll play a game of sweat and acquire i.e. sweat existing assets (e.g. synergies!), acquire to replace declining revenue, rinse and repeat. Lots of divs and share buybacks on offer to keep the price high.

So for some years I have been working on a podcast history of the Indian constitution. It went on abrupt hiatus in 2015 after 14 episodes. (I went to do a Masters.) But it will resume this year with production help from an Indian media company. Details soon.
Working on this podcast it is impossible to miss the peculiar federal structure of the Indian state. And while it is important for politicians and agencies to be cognizant of this, it is also good for citizens to know this. That there are lists...
