Last week the Women & Equalities Select Committee agreed with what @fairplaywomen & @Womans_Place_UK and 1000s of women have been saying : we need clear guidance on what @2010Equality says about single sex services and @EHRC should provide it fairplayforwomen.com/single-sex/
My briefing argues (1) this must cover the full scope of the single sex exemptions - this is not just about refuges and rape crisis centres (2) It must follow the protected characteristic of sex in @2010Equality
(3) It should reject the idea of case-by-case assessments of individuals who are of the opposite sex (4) It should reject the criteria of "passing" introduced in previous guidance which is inhumane and potentially humiliating for all
(5) It should make clear that trans inclusion in public life does not require undermining the integrity, clarity and security of single sex services
It should reject the idea that it is ‘transphobic’ to recognise the protected characteristic of sex, and include ‘gender critical’ women and women’s organisations in the development of the new guidance.
The @EHRC already changed its advice last year. In developing new statutory guidance it must follow the Equality Act and not it's previous guidance.
