"Horizon 2020 is an EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020). The UK has secured €5.5 billion of funding to date (13.5% of the total)" After Brexit, it's bye-bye.

The UK Government has promised to replace H2020 funding for a little while, but there's not a word about what happens after 2020 when the current Horizon 2020 programme winds down, even though the EU is planning to boost funding to €100 billion next time!

So it's all very well Boris Johnson says he'll relax the visa rules for a few key scientists and their families (something he could have done anyway, without Brexit) but if you don't replace the big things too, science will undoubtely suffer.
BTW, this particular debacle is symptomatic of the Government's approach. It always says it *could* replace funding - which is technically true, since in theory anything's possible - but in practice it is highly unlikely to. See for instance the EU's regional development funding.

I wonder what the Remain Alliance would look like if Labour played ball? And I mean really played ball, ie stood down candidates in the areas where the LD or other parties had a better chance? And vice versa for RA parties and Labour?

Labour 260 MPs
Tories/BP: most of rest

Pact

Tories/BP: most of rest
One scenario, the Tories have a majority or a working majority. The other they don't. And in the second scenario, the RA parties have enormously more power collectively than in the first.

Here's why the LibDems pivoting to out-and-out Remain (away from "second referendum with a Remain option and we'll campaign for Remain") is so important: if not the largest party, they could well end up kingmakers. If they're Remain to the core, the price of coalition is clear.
"If you want power, cancel Brexit. We'll support you." (Or words to that effect.) Question is, whether Corbyn really wants to be PM enough to accept that massive trade-off. But at least it's crystal clear.
Because if you look at the LibDems right now, their messaging is fantastic. It's snappy, and unequivocal: ("Stop Brexit", "B-word to Brexit", "Remain Alliance")

But when you look at the convoluted path to actually getting remain, you start to get a itchy feeling.

I've had some amazingly thoughtful tweets in response to my question about the "one best thing" aspect of EU membership. What's been interesting, apart from the numerous mentions of "peace", is how many people picked freedom of movement.
Thing is, I'd probably go along with that. It's a tough toss-up between that and the SM+CU. But the number one best thing about the EU seems to also be the one thing that most Leavers seem intent on getting rid of. It's hard to see how those two are in any way compatible.
What this suggests is that any talk of a healing or coming together isn't just optimistic, it's *impossible*.

Een belangrijk punt voor de fvd is dat de EU niet deugt. Het online partijprogramma is op dit punt (welk wel) overigens niet erg uitgebreid. We lezen iets over ondemocratische moloch en ‘kartel op kartel’. Wat dat inhoudt, wordt niet duidelijk.

De fvd zegt dat de #EU mislukt is en miljarden kost en de economieën in Zuid-Europa er door vernietigd worden. De onderbouwing voor deze beweringen ontbreekt. In de uitgaven voor de EU zijn de miljarden overigens niet terug te vinden.

Although process still ongoing, here some (preliminary) thoughts/ideas reflecting lessons from current (s)election of #EU leadership. Thread acknowledges that there is no 'perfect process' & assumes that Lisbon Treaty won't be (fundamentally) reformed in foreseeable future:
(1) #Spitzenkandidaten process suffered damage but it is here to stay. #GenieIsOutOfTheBottle: political parties will stick to it. BUT: process needs to be (continuously) reformed in light of previous experience while adapting to specific circumstances at beginning of new cycle;
(2) Key innovation of #Spitzenkandidaten process: introduction of #TransnationalList incl. all lead candidates. Voters should have 2nd vote to choose 'favourite' candidate from #EU-wide list. Innovation should apply in 2024 -> #EP / COM-P / (European) Council should endorse it.
