Dominic Cummings was unrepentant tonight after sacking Sajid Javid's special adviser

He told advisers that if they had a problem with his style they knew where the door was

He said they could talk to him in private if they had concerns
Cummings said he was 'pissed off' about people briefing 'bullshit' about spad pay and the lack of gender balance among advisers (h/t numerous @alexwickham stories)

'If you don't like how I run things, there's the door. Fuck off'

So why all this fuss that Johnson might actually try to get a #Brexit Deal through?
First and foremost it’s an acknowledgement that the Commons won.

The Benn Bill keeps No Deal at bay for 3 months. And even Johnson must realise that defying the Commons and refusing to extend at the European Council is a bad look.
Second, the Benn Bill *together with* opposition parties refusing Johnson his 2/3 majority makes an early election a less pleasant prospect for the Tories.

They’d have to go into an election having broken the leave-by-31-Oct pledge.

There were 3 big revelations yesterday in UK politics (11/9/19).

With so much going on it’s easy to get distracted by just 1, but I argue these 3 must be considered together and what they add up to (THREAD).

This goes right to the heart of #Brexit and what is really going on.
The following revelations came to light on 11/9/19:
1) Operation #Yellowhammer document was published
2) Currency speculation with the Pound being shorted post 31st Oct, betting on Brexit happening on schedule and Sterling crashing.
3) Three judges ruled #Prorogation unlawful.

See excellent commentary from @lewis_goodall. Clearly #brexit by the governments own analysis would be deeply damaging in many ways. And there is wide suspicion this isn’t the worst case scenario.

In the often divisive Brexit world of ‘them and us’ it’s easy to forget that, beyond Brexit, EU leaders still see the UK as a close partner and ally. Today’s messages of congratulation to Boris Johnson from across Europe were a timely reminder.. /1
Whatever happens with Brexit, France, Germany, Poland et al still very much hope to work closely with the UK on international issues like Russia sanctions, Iran and human rights protection BUT /2
EU leaders’ welcoming tone does not signal a willingness to accept whatever Prime Minister Johnson might demand in terms of changes to the Brexit deal. He’s right when he says a no deal Brexit is bad for Brussels but he overestimates EU wiggle room /3

While there is widespread disagreement about whether the EU will blink or not over #Brexit (spoiler alert: the bloc is more flexible than it wants to indicate right now) it’s arguably more useful to think what kind of eventual ‘concessions’ we might be talking about from the EU 1
It’s true the EU has a history of blinking in the last moment BUT only in its own interest. In the Greek debt crisis the bloc chose to keep Greece in the eurozone in order (leaders thought) to better protect the whole currency 2
When I say EU will be more flexible than seems right now, I don’t mean ditching the backstop. EU leaders want to protect the single market. They earn more from it than from trade with UK alone. Protecting border on island of Ireland = protecting SM as well as NI peace process 3

1) Brexiters say FoM is Racist because it only applies to Europeans
Lexiters say it's exploitive because EU migrants are underpaid

They both have the same answer,end FoM

However, Brexiters don't really care about non EU migrants, nor do Lexiters about the "exploited" EU workers
2) it's just rank hypocrisy. You don't help non EU migrants by stopping FoM & if someone is abused you don't help them by locking them in their own country

It's similar to the "EU repressed Greece, so we'll support the Greeks by leaving the EU" that we heard from both sides
3) it's been one of the most depressing aspects of #Brexit, brexiters on both sides will go through any logical loop the loop, even betraying their underlying principles, to justify a divisionist, small minded #Brexit
