Greenhouse gas emissions are increasing and ACCELERATING with catastrophic consequences for all life on Earth.

[THREAD]
We're in trouble.

The world marked record highs of emissions in 2018, and will do so again in 2019.

Extremely fast annual reductions in emissions must become mandatory immediately, BUT INSTEAD: 'turning the corner on emissions remains nowhere in sight.'
'ALL PLANNED, PERMITTED AND UNDER CONSTRUCTION fossil infrastructure must be CANCELLED' and some existing 'power plants, cars, industry etc MUST BE CLOSED EARLY.' ⚠️

(Feedbacks mean we've no budget left. Nuclear? Too dangerous in a 2.5C world of collapse.)
'from the carbon pollution we’ve already put into the atmosphere, we’re committed to 1.5–3°C warming over the coming decades and centuries'

But what feedbacks, and the problem of aerosols?

Everything is happening faster than expected.

Do we hit 3°C soon?theguardian.com/environment/cl…
This article is clear, however, the reader isn't given a sense of the truly catastrophic implications of:

1. feedbacks, aerosols, and the CO2 lag that lock in warming

2. the magical carbon-sucking machines needed for 2C that may well never exist at scale.nationalgeographic.com/environment/20…
This very helpful thread bluntly makes a key point: the Paris Agreement is leading us into a 5C world of extinction.

The first tweet lists locked-in warming factors (including shifting baselines which are tricky).

Watch the video in the middle, it's good.
Why do some reports still suggest 2°C is achievable?

They almost always assume that the world will resort to geoengineering and somehow suck vast quantities of CO2 out of the atmosphere.

Scientists are extremely sceptical.

3C...when?

A key problem with carbon-sucking is that fossil fuel companies love the idea - they can claim that continuing business as usual is ok if some non-existant future technological will save the day.

It won't.😱

Slash emissions. Dismantle the Extinction Economy, Build a better one.
