Valiant protesters standing up to a totalitarian regime with a bloody history of repressing democracy movements. Will the free world stand with Hong Kong? Read by @CRosett pjmedia.com/claudiarosett/…
I compared the protests in Hong Kong & Russia in the Washington Post five years ago and the logic remains. The free world has a lot of leverage but won't use it--and Xi Jinping & Putin know it. washingtonpost.com/posteverything…
The question isn't just for the supposed leaders of the free world, but for its citizens. Do they, do you, care enough about global human rights to elect leaders who also do? Because your apathy comes home.
Caring about democracy & rights abroad, in China or Saudi or Russia, isn't imperialism or altruism. It makes the free world safer. It also reinforces the importance of these things at home, where democracy is taken for granted--mistakenly, as should be clear by now.
