SIMILAR GODS & GODDESSES

There exists a lot of similarity between the Japanese & Hindu pantheon of divinities both in form & function.

Many Hindu Gods got integrated into Indian Buddhism & travelling far & wide, reached Japan. In Japan they got an exalted position. For example,
• God Brahma and Bonten in Japan.
• God Narayana is depicted as Naraenten in Japan
• There are a few deities revered in Japan which are similar in form & function to the divinity Shiva in India such as,
- Daikokuten in Japan for Mahakala
- Daijizaiten in Japan for Mahesvara
• Goddess Lakshmi and Kisshoten in Japan.
• Goddess Uma, consort of Shiva as Umahi in Japan
• The warrior God Skanda and Idaten, the fast one in Japan.
• Yama Deva, divinity for death as Enma in Japan
• The Indian Sun God Surya & Nitten as well as Surya’s consort & Amaterasu Omikami in Japan.
• Chandra Deva, the Moon as Gatten in Japan
• Prthivi, Bhuma Devi, the Earth as Jiten in Japan
• The Deva Indra and Taishakuten in Japan.
• Agni Deva, divinity for Fire as Katen in Japan
• Deva Varuna for water and Suiten in Japan.
• Deva Vayu for wind and Futen in Japan.
• Rahu Deva divinity for eclipses as Rago in Japan
• God Vishnu as Bichuten in Japan
The suffix “Ten” is used for God. Kami is also the word for God in Shintoism.

It is interesting to note that the Japanese retained the status of Indra from Vedic period and worshiped him as a main deity Taishakuten, bestowing powers to the Kings in their combats.
There are Temples dedicated to Indra in Shibamata area, Katsushika ward of Tokyo.

Japan’s most famous festivals is Gion Matsuri when many floats r taken out in procession in Kyoto. This festival starts from Yasaka Jinja shrine for ox headed deity Gozu Tenno or Susanoo-no-mikoto.
The origins of praying to this deity can be traced to India, to a Buddhist divinity Gosirsa Devaraj, the guardian deity of Sahet, one of the ancient twin cities of Sahet – Mahet in Shravasti, India, which today are in ruins.
In Japan, this deity gained prominence during an outbreak of an epidemic around 900 CE when prayers to this deity helped save the people of Japan.

The Gion festival was started as an annual thanksgiving to this deity. It is one of the oldest, continuously held festivals in Japan
