Why call yourself a conservative if you don't conserve anything? If you always concede ground to the left? If you don't have any traditions and values worth fighting for? If you just go with the flow and accept anything and everything?
My biggest pet peeve in politics is Republicans and Conservatives that think that we win by catering to the left, By becoming liberals light. Nope ! We win by digging our heels in and becoming unapologetically right wing. By fighting for and articulating our values , brazenly!
The 2 biggest political upsets in the world came from 2 men who never apologized in the face of the leftist mob. Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro. Both men spoke truths that were politically incorrect but true nonetheless, and never apologized for speaking them.

I am a conservative, and as a conservative the main problem in our movement is the people that have been given power to lead or to have strong voices all end up selling us out or capitulating to the left.
We tolerate cucks like Paul Ryan, Marco Rubio, & Ben Shapiro & then we wonder why the left runs roughshod on us. If people like this had their way, Hillary would be President.

I fear we are making the same mistake with Dan Crenshaw. He sounds good but dude caters to the left.
Having good ideas is not enough anymore. We need men and women with guts. People who understand the times we live in and will fight passionately and tenaciously. We need Pit-Bulls who will lock in on the values we hold dear and won't ever let go.

A thread with my critique of today's Guardian piece promoting the launch of the declaration of values and& priorities by the One Nation Group established by Amber Rudd and co. I should be clear that I'm a centre-right liberal Conservative & an ex New Labour party member. [1]
Where to start? I'm not really the biggest admirer of the contemporary iteration of the "One Nation" political ethos in British politics as it tends to get unhelpfully conflated with more authentically centre-right liberal Conservatism. But I'm not deeply hostile to the ethos [2]
I also feel some of the key people involved in the One Nation Group haven't necessarily covered themselves in glory in recent months in terms of their approach to the great issue of the day and age - Brexit. But I've tried my best to approach the article with an open mind. [3]

The progression to more right with age is a historically temporary #American phenomenon born out of the fact that #boomers acquired increasing affluence because of the society in which they found themselves as a result of the #NewDeal & #progressive policies which they inherited
Having been born on third base and believing they had hit a triple, as a generation, they decided to slow this #wealth distribution thing down a little and now we find ourselves where we find ourselves. The move rightwards requires something to conserve.

5 months + in Finland and something I'm finding really hard is this culture of silence or remaining silent (that is almost romanticized or seen as cool), and especially its impact in academic and activist spaces.
1. you're not special for not speaking much, in any context. You're not better than anybody else just because you don't talk a lot. And whatever you do say does not have more value because you speak less than the average person (or in the context of Finland, less than non-Finns).
2. I've now witnessed several occasions in which someone says something very troubling or problematic or antagonises someone, in a room full of activists or academics absolutely capable of challenging them but who will remain silent.
