“An NBC News correspondent went to the man’s house in the Washington area and rang the doorbell.” That seems like a great way to protect someone’s identity. WTAF.
It seems Russian media published all the details first, including the man’s name (if you want to verify, Олег Смоленков). h/t @SharronSmiley for finding it kommersant.ru/doc/4087921
They also published a photo of his house, which is how I’m guessing NBC knew where to go.
That said, if NBC were truly worried about a person’s safety, sending journalists to their house to ring the doorbell doesn’t seem very prudent.
This is kind of interesting—this story posted at almost 1 am in Moscow this morning (or 5:51 pm EST yesterday evening). In other words, at a time when American media is still very much up and running, and Moscow is sleeping.
And actually, Russian media didn’t only publish the photo of the house at 5:51 pm EST yesterday; they published a link to the deed information and address.
In summary, when NBC ran this story 3 hours later, the Russians already knew about this man, and where he lived...because it seems they published it first. (I say seems b/c you never know these days)
