If yesterday’s #CensusData release on poverty, income, and health insurance was tl;dr… here were a few key takeaways to get you caught up….

(THREAD)
First, the biggie.

The share of Americans without health insurance jumped from 7.9% in 2017 to 8.5% in 2018—the first increase in the uninsured rate since the Affordable Care Act took effect.

That’s ~2 million fewer people with health insurance.

2/x
Make no mistake: This is the direct result of the Trump administration’s relentless ACA sabotage.

Meanwhile, if Trump gets his way and the courts strike down the ACA altogether, the uninsured rate would nearly *double.*

3/x
Also worth noting: The uninsured rate remains significantly higher in states where conservative lawmakers have refused to expand Medicaid.

(Reminder: Expanding Medicaid in all states would save some *14 million* lives annually, h/t @rwest817) --->

@rwest817 Second: While corporate profits continue to soar—and despite overall economic growth— median household income was “not statistically different from the 2017 median, following three consecutive years of annual increases.”

5/x
@rwest817 Translation: While the rich continue to get richer, everyday families are treading water at best.

6/x
Third: Hardship would be oodles more widespread if not for the very assistance programs Trump is hell-bent on dismantling—like SNAP.

SNAP alone protected 3.1 million people from poverty last year, as @TrisiDanilo shows in a great thread:

7/x
@TrisiDanilo Reminder of Trump’s ongoing attack on SNAP—which would take food assistance away from the exact same number of people, 3.1 million, while stripping some half a million kids of free school meals --->

8/x
@TrisiDanilo I'll leave it there for now, but lots more to come in this week’s episode of @offkiltershow, when I'll sit down with @econjared to dig in deeper (posts tomorrow).
