Remember when the great "political alchemist" was going to square the Brexit circle and take the country by storm? You get the impression that Boris Johnson is finding governing much harder (and less fun) than he'd thought.
Also telling that he's getting so much trouble in the north: Doncaster, Leeds, Rotherham etc. Aren't these the sorts of areas which are supposed to yield the Tory gains at the election? Hmmm.
The BJ alchhemy thesis was predicated on 2008 Johnson, not 2019 Johnson. He was the ideal leader to build on the 2015 election maj: deliver more liberal voters. His appeal there has crashed. So the alchemy he must perform now is to convert less liberal northern Lab voters. Tricky.
When there isn't much evidence to suggest he appeals that much with those voters and even if he does that he can make them convert to Toryism. Tall, tall order. Arguably Theresa May was at least as well placed in 2017 to do so -and did with some success- but not enough.
