1. 📢Thread 📢How the CST made false allegations about one of my lectures based on faulty analysis and jumping to (inaccurate) conclusions. bit.ly/2kJf2i4
2. The CST claim this slide showed ‘mainstream UK Jewish orgs & individuals in a network under "Israel government". In context of a lecture about Islamophobia this echoes conspiracy & dual loyalty tropes’
3. There are several false claims in this statement. First, the slide showed a pro-Israel group BICOM in the context of the ‘British Zionist scene’
4.Second, it assigns no priority to the relationships except in the sense of stating factually that the JNF UK, UJIA and Zionist Federation are members of Israel based organisations that describe themselves the ‘national institutions’.
5. The UK network is ‘under’ the Israeli government in the diagram in the sense of being further down the page.
6. The slide does not ‘echo’ any ‘tropes’ about conspiracy or dual loyalty, but simply lays out specific factual organisational affiliations.
7. As it happens, the leadership of the transnational Zionist movement today is formed of four key organisations collectively termed the ‘National Institutions’.
8.This is not a ‘conspiracy theory’, they organise in public. Here is a summary of the movement in its own words from the website of the World Zionist Organization:
9. All four of the ‘National Institutions’ are headquartered in the same building in Jerusalem – National Institutions House.
10. Now to the allegations that my slides ‘suggest CST is part of a “pillar of Islamophobia”’
11. No such claim is made in my slides. The slide in question simply draws attention to the Zionist movement - deliberately using square brackets around the CST to indicate it is not a formal part of the Zionist movement.
12.What the slides do say is that ‘ultra-Zionist’ funders are active in fomenting anti Muslim hatred. They are. There was not and is not any suggestion in the slides that CST is involved in this.
13. Next the CST claims it is a ‘UK Jewish charity that protects British Jews from anti-Semitism and terrorism’...
14. And that it does ‘not lobby for Israel: it is wrong to describe CST’s work as that of an “Israel lobby group” or to conflate combating anti-Semitism in the UK with pro-Israel lobbying’
15. There are three false claims here. First, its charitable objectives do not include protecting anyone from terrorism. Rather, in a March 2018 change to its charitable objectives, released to me under FoI, it added combatting ‘extremism’, which, however, it failed to define.
16. Second, the role of the CST in pro Israel activities. A few of the many examples will suffice - the role of the CST in the Fair Play Campaign Group to combat BDS: electronicintifada.net/blogs/asa-wins…
17. The CST involvement with Bicom the pro-Israel lobby group. Gerald Ronson of CST has been on the board of the organisation.
18. The involvement in 2006 of the CST in a Bicom led Israel advocacy campaign. At the time the Jewish Chronicle reported CST as an ‘existing organisation engaged in pro-Israel advocacy’
19. The role of the CST as a member of the Jewish Leadership Council (Gerald Ronson was at least until November 2018 on the council of the JLC). JLC has been active with BICOM and others in campaigning for Israel. web.archive.org/web/2018111422…
20. The role of the CST in working with Mossad on anti-Semitism.
21. The role of the CST in lobbying for changing the law on Universal Jurisdiction – changes made in order that Israeli politicians could not be arrested for war crimes when they visit the UK.
22. The role of the CST in blurring the distinction between Israel and the Jews. Thus as @Jsternweiner shows,
@jsternweiner 23. As @tonylerman has put it: ‘the very fact that [CST] support the ‘new anti-Semitism’ kind of arguments … [means] they are doing the work of the Israel government, because it … is a very strong Israel government line.’ electronicintifada.net/content/ei-exc…
@jsternweiner @tonylerman 24. Is the CST a pro-Israel group? Yes. powerbase.info/index.php/Comm…
@jsternweiner @tonylerman 25. The third inaccurate claim is that my slide on the 'Zionist scene' conflated work against antisemitism with pro-Israel lobbying. As previous Tweets have shown, it is precisely the CST that is guilty of conflating Zionism/pro-Israel sentiment with antisemitism.
@jsternweiner @tonylerman 26. Reporting on that conflation does not amount to replicating it.
@jsternweiner @tonylerman 27. @daverich1 of the @CST_UK responds to my earlier thread on the @Telegraph saying I have dug my hole even deeper.
@jsternweiner @tonylerman @daverich1 @CST_UK @Telegraph 28. What his thread illustrates is the total bankruptcy of the allegations they have sought to marshal against me. They took a handful of Powerpoint slides and without due care or attention leapt to false conclusions that were politically convenient for them.
@jsternweiner @tonylerman @daverich1 @CST_UK @Telegraph 29. That is a disgrace; a violation of their charitable objectives; a very significant attack on the academic freedom to teach evidence-based material on Israel/the Zionist movement; and finally and most importantly, undermines the real fight against racism in our society.
@jsternweiner @tonylerman @daverich1 @CST_UK @Telegraph 30. Let me repeat: There is no evidence in the slides that I ever said that the CST or the Zionist movement more broadly was fostering Islamophobia. I said explicitly on the slides that it is ‘parts of’ the Zionist movement which are so engaged.
