I’m so glad you asked. Allow me to answer in excruciating detail...
This is how the eye is supposed to work. The cornea and lens refract light directly onto the fovea, allowing you to see 20/20. This is how us normals are able to see well without glasses, and lemme tell you, it’s pretty awesome.
Lots of people either have gigantic eyes or steep corneas that refracts TOO well. The light is focused in front of the fovea (near-sighted) instead of ON the fovea and you end up seeing like garbage and sleeping in your contacts.

Let’s start with cysticercosis, a disease in which sacks full of pork tapeworm larvae develop all over your body. I hear it’s a little itchy. Anyway, these little guys travel along the ciliary nerves and nestle under the retina. I don’t blame them, it’s probably warm in there.
Unfortunately, you can’t blast the subretinal cysts with albendazole or they could break open, incite intense inflammation, and cause the eye to shrivel up and die, a process known as phthisis (because of course ophthalmologists call it that)

It's about time the wicked Queen Acanthamoeba started getting some press. She's a lot sneakier than her blithering oaf of a husband. The queen loves water, so if you shower or swim in contacts or if you clean your contacts with tap water, she will find you and she will hurt you.
Contact lens abuse can lead to minor corneal trauma (small epithelial erosions), which provides an easy avenue for acanthomoeba to infiltrate the cornea. The queen has 2 forms: Trophozoites and cysts. The trophs are mobile, they sneak into those erosions and establish residence
Initial symptoms are mild. A little discomfort, a little irritation, nothing major...until the Queen finds your corneal nerves. Then, you get searing pain out of proportion to clinical findings. Your vision may be fine, but if feels like somebody is setting your eyeball on fire.

There is no possible other way to transport humans around, other than every single one having their own $50K to $100K personal vehicle that they drive less than 2% of the time that they own it.

I'm pretty sure that's the only thing that works, because that's what we do here.
