I've done my shift, now the turn of @pmdfoster to explain why the UK Government's apparent Brexit plan won't work...
@pmdfoster Thanks for asking, yes it is a bit frustrating that we keep having to think of new ways to explain why the EU / Irish position is as it is, and why the UK Government or ERG proposals do not provide the answer. 18 months now in my case... sorry for those who got it first time.
@pmdfoster And no, in answer to the other question / comment I see frequently, the EU and Ireland will not be changing their position because the most vocal supporters of a country's decision to leave say that would be for the best.

Ooh goody, the non-paper. The most ridiculous term since Most Favoured Nation at the WTO. In both cases means the opposite of what it seems to mean.

Interesting how yet again the UK has to follow the process EU insist upon, after big talk of not doing so.
I wrote a non-paper once. In keeping with the name I think it had no great effect.
The former (and probably current) civil servants are nodding at that one... yes, those non-papers that were going to make a difference, where we sweated over the exact words for weeks, whereupon... nothing much happened, and if you're lucky one person referenced it...

One of the most dismal parts of Brexit is just how much oft repeated 'common wisdom' about our negotiations is wrong. Bad enough from many media and MPs, worst when it seems government doesn't know any better...
Here's government perpetuating the 'Brexit negotiations at European Council' myth. The EU might want to say that if UK proposals are not tabled by the end of the month they will move into discussions on the extension given the Benn Act...
Reminds me of the 'MPs with different views meeting the other side is wrong' myth. Interesting meeting this one, and how noticeable at how much Barnier makes himself so widely available to those in the UK and EU

Mking financial services a priority in a UK-Australia trade deal. According to the OECD Australia's trade barriers in this area are lower than average, suggesting gains would be modest oecd.org/trade/topics/s…
We should always recall that preferential trade agreement is a more accurate term than free trade agreement. You're getting a better deal than WTO terms. Might not be that much of a better deal, and maybe more an insurance policy against WTO risks.
Agriculture exporters like Australia have clear reasons for trade agreements, as WTO barriers remain high. The EU and US want to export their regulatory systems. Smaller countries want certainty. What does the UK want?

Two things that I'm thinking about as very serious issues this weekend:

1. Do you remember how quickly the Soviet Bloc collapsed? We're all thinking about life post-#Brexit as sort of muddling through, business as usual, but I think that's unlikely. >>>
If there's no deal, if the borders clog up - both looking virtually certain just now - there will be a sudden, long lasting, critical shortage of fresh food. Britain isn't used to that. I believe there will be civil disorder. >>>
It means there will be less food in the shops. It means the prices will rise. It means the poor will go without. It means there will be hunger. It means that social inequity will become even more stark. >>>

1/ There was a time last summer when it looked like the UK Government was taking #Brexit half seriously. They published a slew of papers. OK, much of what was in them was vague, but something was happening. There was effort 💪
2/ Since then everything has slowed... yet the ⏰ now ticks towards the half way point in the #Article50 process. 🤷‍♂️
3/ I tried to sum this up in a blog post yesterday I entitled "Brexit: the UK Government is not even trying" jonworth.eu/brexit-uk-gove… But while it is OK to analyse a problem, I struggle to see what to do about it, short term.
