Ooh goody, the non-paper. The most ridiculous term since Most Favoured Nation at the WTO. In both cases means the opposite of what it seems to mean.

Interesting how yet again the UK has to follow the process EU insist upon, after big talk of not doing so.
I wrote a non-paper once. In keeping with the name I think it had no great effect.
The former (and probably current) civil servants are nodding at that one... yes, those non-papers that were going to make a difference, where we sweated over the exact words for weeks, whereupon... nothing much happened, and if you're lucky one person referenced it...

Weekend Brexit analysis. Nothing happened that wasn't totally predictable and predicted.

Weekend political analysis. Good of the Labour Party to compete so energetically with the Conservatives for unelectability.
The UK currently has the politics of purity in a world of complexity and compromise. Those playing think it is winner takes all, and all means fair to achieve that. Those not playing hope for resolution of some kind. But resolution can't come without compromise.
However UK must simultaneously find compromises within two main parties, in Northern Ireland, and with our neighbours, which might just be too much for any country to cope with in a short time. The challenge is that non partisans are attacked from all sides even for this analysis

Two months ago Boris Johnson said he wouldn't talk with the EU until they dropped the backstop. As realistic as the Commission saying they wouldn't reopen the Withdrawal Agreement.

The EU will always talk. But they won't back down on their Ireland red lines.
And the simple response to the UK Government - if your proposals were so good why have you kept them secret from EU Member States and your own MPs?

Same old failure to understand borders and wishful thinking the EU will back down
Mildly reassuring that the UK Government knows the EU side leaks. But it does that particularly when negotiating partners have unrealistic expectations, happens rather less when things are going well.

So of course we're already party to a trade agreement with Japan, which the Japanese have refused to replicate in the case of a no-deal Brexit, either to encourage us to make a deal with the EU, or because they want more concessions from us. None of this mentioned...
There's a new call for evidence on what we'd want from a Japan trade agreement, as there was for US, Australia, NZ last year. Most responses saying they wanted to prioritise the EU relationship, but there we go...
Biggest problem, as I say here, is that we've now prioritised trade agreements with the US, New Zealand, Australia and Japan. Plus presumably the EU. Which really isn't deliverable in quick time, even if you knew what you wanted, which we don't.... ft.com/content/b6a047…

Countries charge import duties (or tariffs) on goods that enter the country. For example the EU charges 8% per pair on some types of shoes.

(So does the UK, because all EU members have the same tariffs)

@juniordrblog Sorry computer glitch. The next tweet was meant to say that originally there were no disciplines on tariffs. Countries could set them at any rate, and raise or lower them at will

@juniordrblog Then came the depression when countries complained that others had unfair advantages so they raised tariffs against each other to protect their producers.

It was a trade war. (Sounds familiar? 'Fraid so)

Rather than protect jobs, the trade war just worsened the depression.

The next in line is a genuinely anomalous study, the Caerphilly study. It's an observational study of ~2500 men in Wales that were followed for five years starting in 1979. This study showed a remarkable trend. Those who ate the least had the most CHD.
The finding was that total energy intake was the only statistically significant predictor of heart disease, and it had an inverse relationship with CHD. Yes, those who ate the fewest calories had the highest risk. This would overturn most of what we know about nutrition if true.
In addition, this study is of questionable relevance to S-T and Krauss's study since it did not separately assess SFA intake, but only used a marker for "animal fat" ignoring possible plant based sources of SFA.
