For the sake of clarity, #hauliers are NOT responsible for fulfilling the vast majority of #customs & #regulatory requirements needed to be admitted on board the ferry / in the port area to pick up or deliver goods. This is the responsibility of 1/ ft.com/content/0a37d1…
The #trader (acting as the 'importer' from an EU perspective). That task can be outsourced to an intermediary - of which there is a lack of in the UK so many companies are struggling to find the help they need. The #haulier needs to ensure his/her #driver is in possession of 2/
The right proofs that the required #formalities have been completed & responsible for dealing with the #safety & #security #declaration if the #cargo is transported through #accompanied #transport (which, again, is a task that can be outsourced). 3/
So what will #hauliers do to avoid getting stuck in a queue only to be denied access to the #ferry (or pickup area for trailers)? They will likely demand that proofs of the formalities are provided when they pick up the loads. Won't happen 100% initially for sure but 4/
Might become more routine-like depending on their experience in the first few weeks. And if they don't get sufficient proof, there's a possibility they might refuse the load (or charge their client extra for the wasted waiting time for their driver). All of this will have to 5/
Be defined in contracts of course. What will be the impact for the #traders? Their goods won't move. They'll get stuck - either at the point of departure, or on board the #lorry, or at the #port. None of these options are good for #SupplyChain flow - esp for SMEs 6/
And if lorries are immobilised, neither the #lorry nor the #driver will be able to carry as much as today so not good either. So what are we doing about it? Working on ensuring that #traders and #operators alike get most complete information possible. Push Gvt & the EU 7/
To answer remaining questions (& there are many!) & at least replicate the #easements previously agreed (pre-12 April). Share the info we have widely with members & develop #training & support offer. And very importantly, work with Gvt and other actors in the chain 8/
To find solutions to provide support to those that will need it. Ensure #trucks are not simply turned away from the #border with no information or prospect to cross. Ensure everyone can get support close to their #pickup point & not only 10 miles away from the #ports. 9/
Will it be enough? We are certainly working extremely hard to ensure that anything that can still get done at this point gets done. Doesn't mean we want or would be happy about #NoDeal. We're very clear a #deal is what needs to happen. But supporting our members & 10/
Making sure they're not left to their own device with no help or solution. Because that's what we're here for. / END
