If people are wondering why I keep re-tweeting folks talking about how data-as-property is a bad idea, it’s because I’m currently pretty irate about a bill that was introduced in the Oregon legislature as a “privacy” bill. 1/x
First off, commodifying our rights is a bad and inequitable idea on its face. Rights should be rights, period. They should not be for sale, and we shouldn’t be creating systems where people are given financial incentive to relinquish their rights. 2/x
Second, we don’t NEED to make our data property to protect it. We just need stronger privacy laws. We can create frameworks that give people more control over their data, and that create mechanisms for oversight & enforcement of those rights, without turning it into property. 3/x

Dear @rssharma3 This is NOT about #Aadhaar, but your data is being leaked by @PayUmoney I just had to enter your email ID to get your stored card. I don't know how you see this. #Privacy #DataProtection

1. Please Delete your stored card from payumoney.com/customer/dashb…
The issue was reported to PayU months back, but the company seems to not understand the issue of tokenized card information exposing last 4 digits as a privacy issue.

This was what @PayUmoney had to say when @jaivardhan88 of @entrackr asked them about it few months back.

Here’s a short EU #dataprotection thread relating to some of the work I‘ve been doing on #researchethics. The #GDPR is broadly a very good thing but it’s starting to look like a bit of a car crash for established ethical standards in research (1)
Why? A combination of highly effective market research lobbying for business as usual together with wider demands to “repurpose” data for “research” pushed EU negotiators into lowering the data protection bar for “research” activities across the board (2)
Fine you might say, research is very important and we shouldn’t overregulate. But what it means in practice is that once someone has your data, it is now much fairer game for “research” purposes (3)

What’s that you say? I haven’t tweeted in a few days about this AMAZING JOB w @AutisticaUK & @turinginst that I’d love for you to apply for or share with anyone you know?

GO ON THEN. A thread about our values and project outcomes! 🌟🙌🏿🙌🏾👩🏻‍💻👩🏿‍💻👨🏼‍💻👨🏾‍💻😬🥰💖🥳

turing.ac.uk/work-turing/re…
The values are attached as a pdf to the job description linked above. Here’s the direct link: turing.ac.uk/sites/default/…

Before I dig into them I want to give a quick shout out to Georgia Aitkenhead who wrote the first draft based on our long conversations. THANK YOU Georgia!
The values are only loosely ordered. Don’t read too much into which ones come first etc. They’re ALL important.

When you apply for the job PLEASE address the values in your cover letter. It’s an essential requirement that you have a commitment to these values.

We have begun collecting all human behaviour and putting the machine in between human beings and every transaction in life. In doing that, we are increasingly operating our society on a new basis.
The omnipresent smartphones and digital businesses around us have caused a permanent shift in our societies.
We are now operating with a new form of social science that we don't understand yet, but which we are already using in much the same way that physics was used to change European society in the 17th and 18th centuries.

just been told by the folks at @Experian that because I choose to keep my electoral roll details private, henceforth I will be refused all online credit as experian will score me less than 90%.

They see data privacy essentially a financial risk. #dataprotection

FYI @ICOnews
they say:

"Experian’s Electoral Roll Department have confirmed that you are registered as an 'other elector'. This means that your name is recorded on a register where the address is kept confidential."
" In order for electoral roll information to be recorded on a credit report it does need to be recorded at an address. As your local authority has not confirmed your address as part of the electoral roll registration.....

This all started because the #MetPolice & #LBRUT couldn't do their day jobs properly & decided to take the law into their own hands. It started as a small cover up 12 years ago but has turned into British State Persecution.

#Skynews #BBCNews #DailyMail #Guardian #Euronews
My company was raided. It should have been a straightforward matter. But the #MetPolice & #LBRUT forgot to seize my computer & came back to do a 2nd raid. The search warrant didn't permit a second entry, however, #LBRUT entered unlawfully

#Guardian #Telegraph #DailyMail #GMB #UK
Complaints were then made to my MP #VinceCable. He liaised with the #Metpolice & #LBRUT. And then weeks later, the search warrant was completely changed & was passed off as the search warrant executed on the day of the raids.

Reading through the draft Chinese Civil Code and some observations re #dataprotection:
1/4 Privacy and personal information are treated as two separate rights but covered in the same chapter (Pt3 Ch3: "Right to Privacy and Personal Information")
2/4 Some principles of the EU model are reflected: Lawfulness, Fairness and Necessity; Transparency; Purpose Limitation (art 814), Integrity and Confidentiality (art 817)
3/4 Right to access, copy, rectification, erasure (art 815); right to breach notification (art 817)

Takeaways from @Dell financial call today... Dell is taking share across the board...will do $90-$92B in revenue this fy. Setting up for tough compare for next year. Dell citing favorable spending environment, assumptions are 2X GDP for IT spend...
Dell citing attractiveness of 1-stop shopping (end-to-end - edge->core->cloud) I surmise their cloud is VMware with AWS...Since EMC transaction, Dell is posturing as a much more strategic supplier than either Dell or EMC was as an independent company.
new sales comp plans implemented by Dell - @JClarkeatDell fingerprints seen on the enterprise storage biz which he took over about 1 yr ago. Storage was sucking wind post EMC transaction & is now gaining share. I think IDC numbers coming out soon showing Dell EMC gains

UCC had opportunity to comment on the #Data.Protection & Privacy Bill. The enactment of this law is long overdue. A comprehensive law on the collection & processing personal information gives effect to the right to Privacy envisaged under Article 27(2) of the Constitution
UCC welcome the protections offered by the Bill in terms of export of data, breach notification requirements, data subjects access rights, automated decision making, compensation and the right to be forgotten and provision for financial and penal sanctions for breach of the law.
Distinction between Data collectors & data controllers.
The Bill should however clarify & distinguish Data Collectors, from Data Processors & Data Controllers. Clause 2 is inconsistent with international good practice which provides for two broad categories of Data Controllers

#Consumerprotection
This thread explores #consumerprotection aspects in the new broadcasting licensing regime. When in full force it will have hallmarks of what is happening else where in the region. Currently, all broadcasting are in advanced stages of signing agreements
There are three fundamental reasons why we regulate:
1. For effective and robust competition (avoid market failure)
2. Protect #consumers (ensure #consumer interests are protected)
3. Ensure widespread access to networks and services (preventing anti-competitive practices
#Consumerprotection in the new PUBLIC SERVICE PROVIDER LICENCE has a pricing condition requiring the Licensee (broadcaster) to within fourteen (14) days after signing the Licence Agreement, to provide @UCC_Official with a copy of its charges for all licensed services.

Our questions to Justice Srikrishna on the concerns and criticisms since Friday evening on #DataProtection here. Of course, there will be more but this covers what has been discussed so far. Thread 👇
1. You mentioned the premise of the report is to unlock the data economy while keeping data of citizens secure and protected. Basically ensure public good plus protect informational privacy. Was this balance all the more needed for a developing economy like India?
2. While you have defined consent, consent is only one of the grounds for processing of personal data. There is provision that allows processing for reasonable purposes, especially allowing the state to process data. Does this give the govt overarching power?

When it comes to #DataProtection ..
Indians must ask for all the rights mentioned in #GDPR from Article 12 to Article 22 ..
If govt don't want to give apply Article 23 .. I won't even press for it ..
Stop writing sham of laws Mr. @rsprasad ..
India demands Real GDPR
#GDPR Article 15 has "Right of access by the data subject" (Screenshot 1)
In Prasad babu's #Dataprotection it become "Right to Reconfirmation and Access"
Huge and Vast differences ..Means, It has no rights at all for the Indians
#GDPR Article 16 Gives CLEAR & UNAMBIGUOUS "Right to rectification"
Prasad Babu's #DataProtection Section 25 becomes "Right to correction etc"
A Wholesome Cocktail of Ambiguous Processes and obfuscations so User may have to wait "from Weeks to Forever" to rectify

Reading the #dataprotection bill from the following point of view
How can the state violate our privacy? Let me count the ways
1. Processing of personal data in the interests of security of the state
(Our current surveillance laws would keep the stasi perfectly happy)
2. For the 'prevention' of offences and contraventions of law.
( Remember sedition is a criminal offence)
#DataProtection #privacy
3. For the 'detection' of an offence
(Same as above but prevention and detection are different so merits its own place on my list)

I am trying to read the Data Sharing Bill. #dsbill

Why. Why is it like this?

"Base registry". "Base registry owner."
It is not just the Data Sharing Bill, but the Data Sharing And Governance Bill.

The Governance part, one might have thought, is covered by the GDPR & DPAs. But no, it creates a shadow system.
The scope of "public bodies" covered is eye-watering: ministers, Revenue, Gardaí, Defence Forces, E&TBs, schools, bodies partly funded by Gov, subsidiaries ...

Today, @NITIAayog released a Discussion Paper titled ‘National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence”. #AIforAll
niti.gov.in/writereaddata/…
We provide our initial thoughts on the paper here. 1/n
We welcome this initiative by @NITIAayog, but a call for comments would have been a welcome addition. The paper takes important steps forward from the #AI Task Force report released earlier this year by the DIPP, Ministry of Commerce and Industry (dipp.nic.in/sites/default/…). 2/n
This paper attempts a more holistic look at a broader range of issues concerning AI including #regulation, #ethics, #fairness, #transparency and #accountability. However, a number of issues still remain with this paper. 3/n

Today, @CER_EU publishes my piece on #Brexit and #JHA. I have been looking at this for 1,5 years so I hope I did not make too many mistakes (links to piece - cer.eu/publications/a… and opens thread)
At the outset of the #Brexit process, most people assumed that a deal on #police and #judicial co-operation was easier to get than one on #trade. Time has shown this is not the case. Ongoing co-op on #JHA is one of the few items yet to be agreed on #withdrawal deal. Why?
Well, because the #EU and #UK's opening positions in the #negotiation are incompatible: Britain wants a #bespoke agreement with the EU, a la #Schengen, but is not willing to accept #ECJ or #EUCharter. EU wants to replicate existing models. What to do?
