For vehicle data GDPR is just the beginning and stay tuned for the Data Governance Act, says German Brandenburg regional government in Q&A 1/5

#dataprivacy #dataprotection #connectedvehicles #autonomousvehicles
- Vehicle manufacturers have to observe GDPR when collecting and processing data. The customer's consent to the use of their data (e.g. on-board systems such as car apps) should always obtained when purchasing. 2/5
GDPR is a good foundation for ensuring data protection for data collected, processed and stored by modern vehicles. The legal requirements on "privacy by design" and "privacy by default" are important cornerstones to take into account when developing products. 3/5

“Are apps listening to people's conversations to improve ad targeting?” I was contacted by leading Italian newspaper @repubblica to comment on this controversy. Find my response in this thread.

*** QUESTION 1 ***
Is it possible for apps (“commercial” apps, not surveillance apps used by law enforcement) to secretly record conversations of users? 2/n
Yes, this is theoretically possible. Apps regularly obtain from us the permission to use our smartphones’ microphones. And many apps are suspected to misuse this permission for dubious purposes (e.g., to track us via “ultrasonic beacons”). 3/n

Welcome back, George.

Now, about that "race-to-the-bottom" slashing of #data #protections...
...which, despite fine words about "maintaining high standards", is plainly the intent of @DCMS's proposed #DataProtection 'reforms':

...which include the intent to (re)define "#ScientificResearch" 🤔🤔🤔
Of course, we understand #TIGRR's "enthusiasm for #digital", its eye on the value of "highly #profitable consumer data", and frustration with the pesky #protections and #safeguards of #UKGDPR...

A quick sample of initial reactions...

We're clearly going to be hearing a lot about #LegitimateInterests, as well as #commercial and #public ones. The real question being, how do this Government's interests actually align with YOURS?

140+ pages on a Friday is a lot to digest, but @lilianedwards' "penumbra of often futile determinedly populist ideas largely not evidence-based" seems entirely consistent with @DCMS's Drunkard's Walk through #data and #ID this past year...

Good to see this. My recommendation: the new UK #dataprotection law should include reduced record-keeping requirements for organisations with fewer than 250 employees, and also more generally encourage the ICO to take account of the specific needs of SMEs. #UKGDPR #datareform "However, the government recognises that the current re

#Breaking: #MadrasHighCourt rules that "right to be forgotten" cannot exist in sphere of administration of justice, particularly when it comes to judgments; HC deviates from its initial, prima facie view that accused have a right to have names redacted from orders once acquitted.
Court observes that there is no law in India such as the General Data Protection Regulation for EU which includes a "right to erasure". Without such statutory backing, Court cannot issue any directions on the "right to be forgotten", Court holds.

#MadrasHighCourt
"There must be a proper policy formulated ... failing which, such an exercise will lead to utter confusion. This Court must take judicial notice of the fact that the criminal justice system that is prevalent in this country is far from satisfactory."

There's a growing drumbeat (in Washington) that China's new #privacy laws give Chinese citizens' greater protections than in the US -- and that's good enough reason for DC to pursue federal #dataprotection laws.

Let's unpack why that argument doesn't make sense.

<<cue thread>>
So it's true that Beijing is rolling out a comprehensive national #privacy standard that, in its very basic levels, is based on Europe's General Data Protection Regulation. You can read a translation here newamerica.org/cybersecurity-…
It hits all the needs-to-have: greater consent for how data is used, checked. data breach notification requirements, check. potential hefty fines for wrongdoing, check.

Again, at a basic level, it does look like the GDPR.
