#DataPrivacyDay reminds us to treat personal information like money. It has value & we need to protect it as if our lives depended on it bcuz sometimes they do.
Always question why information is required. Identity fraud can mean losing everything.

Earlier today, we posted a thread of what happened after Michael Gove announced plans to open up the National Pupil Database for commercial re-use ten years ago on November 6th, 2012
But letโ€™s also remember what happened before then, starting in 2002. 1/10
Twenty years ago the then Lab. government decided to add names to create pupil-level records for the first time in the formerly aggregated school-level census (as still mostly done in private schools). news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/educationโ€ฆ Terri Dowty was on the ball from the start. 2/10
Many could foresee the surveillance it would become, while (2002) DfE staff said, โ€œThe data would be stored securely, no data would be copied to other organisations without a clear need and data would not be used for marketing purposes or sold to private companiesโ€. 3/10

"Why Certain Technologies Are Creepy - And What Engineers Can Do About It" - This week's edition of The Privacy Whisperer is out, and it's about #privacy and creepy #technologies: theprivacywhisperer.com/p/why-certain-โ€ฆ

๐Ÿงต (1/8)
Technology is immensely powerful, it can bring so many positive transformations. However, humans must always be the focus. It does not matter how innovative a certain technology is, there should always be adequate constraints and mechanisms to support humans & prevent harm.
(2/8)
I show how AirTags used by abusive ex-partners and stalkers, deepfakes in non-consensual pornography, and automated gender recognition software are forms of creepy technologies that can be used to oppress and harm people.

Bad enough that @SensyneHealth has cost NHS Trusts nearly ยฃ15 million - Lord Drayson's claim to be 'giving something back to the NHS' lies in tatters - but what people should *really* be asking about is the MILLIONS of #patients' data the company claims to be processing...

๐Ÿ”ฅWhat are the 9 #GDPR principles and why they matter for you:
1. Lawfulness (Art. 5.1.a): your personal data can only be collected, processed or used according to what the law establishes. For example, Art. 6.1 specifies six situations in which your data can be processed lawfully, consent is one of them.
2. Fairness (Art. 5.1.a): tricky principle, as there is no express indication of its meaning in the GDPR. The @ICOnews says that it means that your data cannot be processed in a way that is unduly detrimental, unexpected or misleading to you. I am working on that in my PhD :)

commonsbusiness.parliament.uk/Document/58558โ€ฆ #dataprotection

We at @OpenRightsGroup made an analysis on what to expect today. Thread below
2) This Govt want the UK digital sector to be as dirty and dishonest as them, and they wrote a law for no one but the law-breakers. Everyone else will have less rights, less choices, and less access to recourse if something goes wrong.
openrightsgroup.org/publications/dโ€ฆ
3) On top of that, mass data sharing to law enforcement agencies will cement the UK digital police state. The UK Govt will authorise any data seizure or use on their whims and with secondary legislation, undermining lawfulness and purpose limitation.

Do something. Believe me - I know that call, that drive. 12 years ago I turned my life upside down, changed careers to became a 'digital humanitarian', learned new skills, and converged with others on the complex journey to use data and tech for impact. ๐Ÿงต on some suggestions.
People before data/technology. (Full stop. Deep breath. Roll shoulders.) How will it help people in this emergency and others? I have gotten multiple notes on various social media platforms and really hope that that passion to do something can convert to action -now &over time.
Ask yourself - What are the skills, tools, and networks that I need to get involved? What do people really need from us? How will I also take care of myself and my people? Honestly, onboarding into digital, data & tech for impact is rocky and full of complexity. Start somewhere.

For vehicle data GDPR is just the beginning and stay tuned for the Data Governance Act, says German Brandenburg regional government in Q&A 1/5

#dataprivacy #dataprotection #connectedvehicles #autonomousvehicles
- Vehicle manufacturers have to observe GDPR when collecting and processing data. The customer's consent to the use of their data (e.g. on-board systems such as car apps) should always obtained when purchasing. 2/5
GDPR is a good foundation for ensuring data protection for data collected, processed and stored by modern vehicles. The legal requirements on "privacy by design" and "privacy by default" are important cornerstones to take into account when developing products. 3/5
