WTF! For MONTHS NOW, no one can get freezers anywhere! And now, suddenly:

UPS constructs FREEZER FARMS as part of Operation Warp Speed to keep #COVID19 vaccines cool:

bizjournals.com/louisville/new…
These shortages are no secret -- from WCAX (with video):

wcax.com/2020/08/26/fre…

Claims that factories had to socially distance, so freezer output REMAINS at 50%. (Just like the meat factories! Permanent reduction of output!)
So what's the truth? DPA was invoked, after all -- are our freezer factories churning out special low-temp freezers for COVID-19 vaccine freezer farms?

A recent piece by Xu Qiyuan, CF40 Director of Research, on global #supplychain restructuring:

global.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202006/22/WS…

The diversified development of the global industrial chain over the long run will threaten to weaken China's position in it.

1/6
The global industrial chain is facing huge uncertainties amid #China-#US trade frictions and the unexpected #COVID19. In this context, its layout will give more consideration to the safety-efficiency balance, and will present new features of diversification and block.

2/6
The US continues to tighten restrictions on China in the high-end #technology sector while exerting pressure on other countries through its international networks.

Global #supplychain is going through adjustments.

From the perspective of #US domestic politics, #globalization has put workers into a disadvantaged position with increasing income inequality.
Class tensions are more acute, especially in the US.

The sharpening of domestic political contradictions is bound to change US foreign policy and its attitude towards globalization.
From a geopolitical perspective, China's rise has led to the Thucydides Trap, and the US is bound to strike #China down. The closer China is to the US, the harder this crackdown will be.

THREAD: The shock that the novel coronavirus has brought to the global supply chain is a technical issue, rather than one about “decoupling”:
new.cf40.org.cn/uploads/202006…
#supplychain #COVID19
Economic relation between China and the US has lasted for over 4 decades and there have been large amounts of investments into it on both two sides, and there is some ground to compare China-US relationship to a marriage.
It would be quite difficult for the two sides to divide their “marital properties”. A “divorce” would therefore be extremely expensive. The decoupling will cost a lot, not only for China but also for businesses as well as the economic and financial community in the US.

# COVID19 will possibly restructure the global economic landscape, bringing about 2 major risks, said Prof Huang Yiping:
mp.weixin.qq.com/s/RXnMaJAyR_mx…

The first risk is that anti-globalization will find new momentum after the pandemic.
E.g. the pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities in global supply chain, and led some to believe that the #supplychain for facial mask production should be localized.
That's not the beginning of the anti-globalization drive, since even before the virus broke out, we were already talking about the possibility of partial decoupling between #China & the #US.

📽️ Olivier De Schutter spoke to @FRANCE24 on global supply chain disruption.

💬 Why are so many people on the brink in a world that produces more than enough to eat?

See '#COVID19: Global #food supply on a razor's edge' on the @DownToEarth programme 👇

.@DeSchutterO: "Our #food system as it is has been conceived & designed in order to be as efficient as possible. “Efficiency” - meaning uniformity, economies of scale and specialisation - was prioritised at the expense of #resilience."

"We need to re-shift our efforts from the search for efficiency to the search for resilience... #Resilience being the ability of a system to withstand a shock, whether it is climatic, sanitary or economic."

#COVID19 will hold back instead of accelerating the shift of #industrialchain out of #China, by Robin Xing at Morgan Stanley: lnkd.in/g8EMRdn

Why?
1. Relocation means new #investment, but no one wants to invest amid a global #recession. The priority of multinationals in the near future will be to maintain cashflow and cut investment, not making new capital expenditures.
2. Many global leading companies feel the differences between China and other countries. China's management capabilities demonstrated in the process of resuming work and production further proved its #manufacturing advantages over other emerging markets.
