When the news is breaking fast (like right now with probable impeachment inquiry and release of phone call transcript pending), most news sites, even the low-reliability, highly biased ones, have very similar fact-based, minimally-biased stories front and center on their pages
Even the worst outlets do this as a result of two factors 1) they need to surface actual breaking news when it happens to give readers a reason to rely on them for actual news and 2) there isn’t much time to add spin. An insidious effect is that it provides an example for the
outlets and their readers to point to and say “see? We are real news,” even when the source is in the polarization business. But when the news slows over the next 24-48 hours, differences start to appear between the content on these news sites—differences that are key to
evaluating the reliability and bias of the site overall. In 24-48 hours, the high percentage of analysis and opinion pieces telling you how the news events were terrible or great for one side or another are what distinguishes junk news sites from good news sites. The takeaway:
We measure this. Even low-ranking sources give you decent news when it breaks. Don’t let them drag you in with that and keep you there to read the rest of their garbage. Adfontesmedia.com
