Can it be called news if it’s billions of years from happening? Actually the new result is the gorgeous discovery by @Sydney_Uni of 2 previous galaxy collisions in Andromeda’s past making it even larger for the one with us!
The infalling smaller galaxies into Andromeda arrived in two vastly different directions, which is a prediction of the cosmic web where galaxies and gas flow along filaments into intersection points or nodes - and those nodes contain galaxies like Andromeda!
The stretching of dark matter filaments across millions of light years that link galaxies into a cosmic web long predicted in supercomputer simulations like Illustris 👇 
But now this cosmic web has been revealed by incredibly faint hydrogen tenuously lying along that dark matter structure cosmosmagazine.com/space/filaments
This Cosmic Web means galaxies should have lots of material on their outskirts flowing in - and yet my @Swinburne colleague Cherie Day was in a team that illuminated this gas with a fast radio burst and saw nothing! eso.org/public/news/es…
A consequence of galaxies growing from the cosmic web can be material funnelled into the supermassive blackhole at their centre leading to a massive outburst of radiation
