1/ Reminds me of last July, when my 75 year old mother in law, living alone in Brooklyn & just back from visiting family in rural Northern California, checked herself into the ER of a @usnews top hospital in NYC.
2/ She'd had >1 week of sleeping most of the time, rash, minimal oral intake, and severe all-over aches. The attentive doc at her local Brooklyn hospital had diagnosed her (wrongly, as it turned out, but no matter) with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and prescribed doxycycline.
3/ Early in the morning 3 days later, rash gone but otherwise feeling worse, she checked herself in to New York's Greatest Hospital ER. At first, all good--blood drawn, IV fluids, antibiotics started, attention from nurses, every specialist in the house coming to check her out.

1/ Interesting & troubling @drewharwell story. Even assuming that these AI screens of social media are unbiased and valid predictors (a major assumption), they're still deeply problematic. Analogizing it to a screening test shows why. washingtonpost.com/technology/201…
2/ As with any test, there's a sensitivity/specificity tradeoff. If the algorithm is set to be very specific, it will let more false negatives through (i.e., will be more likely to give problematic babysitters a pass). That will make customers unhappy.
3/ On the other hand, if it's set to be very sensitive, it will flag many babysitters who would be just fine as potentially problematic. That will hurt a lot of perfectly wonderful young people.

OK. It's happening, and I can finally talk openly about it (a thread).

I have decided to transfer from my #PhD into a #Masters degree. I'm currently writing my thesis - I'm due to submit in October.

And I want to talk about it, because we don't talk about this enough.
This isn't a decision I've made lightly, or impulsively. It's due to a plethora of factors, including personal, project and professional reasons. It's something I've been thinking about for a long time, and something I should have thought more about before I even started my PhD.
I like studying. I like learning. I loved university, honours was challenging, but a PhD was the next logical step. I took a little time off (not enough)-but getting a scholarship early pretty much confirmed I'm be moving on to the next part of my academic life.

Like announced, I'll start a thread on the symbolism of the (in)famous black & white banner in #Islam. This comprehensive thread will explore its historical origins and cover a list of its contemporary users from a neutral #academic point of view. Not for the faint of heart. 😄
As a political leader & head of a growing religious community, the #prophet Muḥammad used to fly a banner (liwāʾ) and a flag (rāya). The difference? According to the #dictionary, a banner is "a long piece of cloth" while a flag is "a piece of cloth that represents a group."
The Companion Ibn al-ʿArabī was quoted in Fatḥ al-Bārī (6/147) as saying: "A banner is what is tied to the side of a spear to rally around, while a flag is that which is planted and left to be waved by the wind."

1/ It’s simple to note: One has to subtract before adding. Give up what’s bad, before thinking about adding what’s good. True for habits, food, news and everything else.
#life 2/ We live in a world with many apparent "signals”.

We’re consuming:
- More info/news/entertainment
- More food
- More social networking
- More things to-do/work...

…than prior generations. It’s making us lazy and critically, disengaged.
#life 3/ It’s unclear what the signal to noise ratio is - it’s a function of one’s own consumption habits.

And separately, we’re prone to setting additional goals too:
- Read good books
- Eat a healthy diet
- Have fewer but better friends
- Work smart
