As things stand this morning it seems govt probs numbers to get 2nd reading of Brexit bill thro, which is the very first basic step to get the debates started
But they may well NOT have the numbers to get MPs to back their 100mph timetable - not at all clear what they would do if that happens - what's the priority? Sticking to Johnson's deadline? Or trying to get this deal through smoothly?
If govt loses control of timetable it might lose control of the whole thing and end up losing or with something totally unrecognisable anyway... but some wobbly tories would hate something drastic like pulling it all today - let's see - votes not til this evening

Govt likely to table similar bill to lib Dems and SNP tomorrow if they fail to get election tonight - no 10 source says they 'will introduce a bill almost identical to the Lib Dem-SNP bill and we will have a pre-Christmas election anyway'
Shadow Cabinet sat down to discuss position at 12 - members aware it's much harder for them to resist call for election with the other two main opposition parties out backing one
What we don't know is if govt would stick to the date of the 9th, but it implies ministers would give up attempt to get bill through

Tusk speaks - extension on for Jan 31st - this might, in theory, meant that the parties in SW1 all actually have to make up their minds what to do now, in practice, quite possibly not
But expect that we will see the Prime Minister today somewhere, but not actually in a ditch, despite his earlier promises to the contrary
Q for Labour having said repeatedly that once delay agreed they'd back election, or will they demand even more guarantees that PM would never take UK out without a deal before they say yes...- difference btw those 2 positions masks disagreement in party + shad cab over what to do

Not sure he will spell it out at the despatch box, but it seems if MP s won't agree govt timetable for Brexit legislation tonight, they will pull it, and if EU then offers a delay, they would push straight for an election instead
No 10 source says, 'if Parliament votes again for delay by voting down the programme motion, and the EU offers delay until 31 Jan -- then we will pull the Bill, there will be no further business for Parliament and we'll move to an election before Christmas'
Understand there have been pretty fraught conversations among Tory MPs over whether to do this or keep going and accept a slower timetable set by Parliament - govt seems to have chosen instead essentially to go on strike if the Brexit legislation doesn't progress tonight

The increased support for a ‘no deal’ Brexit is the ultimate failure of the Leave movement. It’s the inevitable consequence of the refusal to grasp details, come to terms with complexity & coalesce around a plan. Compromise can be frustrating. So instead they will have a tantrum.
Some Brexiteers advocated sensible solutions. The EFTA/EEA solution gained a lot of traction in the years before the ref. Even Farage had promoted it & countless others. See Farage below from 2011 essentially making the ‘Liberal Leave’ case!
