Currently, if you bring personal effects exceeding N50,000 into Nigeria you‘re liable to Customs duty. This week (acc to news reports) the House of Reps commenced moves to amend the value, to reflect current realities. The 50k value apparently never been amended over the years.
The 50,000 is enshrined in some Customs law apparently (not sure which - tried searching CEMA but couldn’t find it, maybe I missed it). Anyway - now @HouseNGR working on amending the law. I’m sure that 50k been there since the days where it was equiv to maybe $500 or even more...
Our laws are full of dated ‘values’ / thresholds of this nature. Also applies to fines too. There are still fines enshrined in 1980s laws that are a few hundred Naira - substantial at the time but meaningless today. @nassnigeria - over to you, plenty routine amendments needed.
