Facebook’s argument for allowing political ads is that it allows for “underdog” candidates to reach people they otherwise wouldn’t. If that’s the case then why don’t they create a spending limit so campaigns with wealthy donors can’t buy $1,000,000+ in misleading ads/day?
They could ban political ads or restrict political ad spending. They could ban all misleading ads. They could limit the number of ads mentioning a candidate. And/or limit the number of political ads people are exposed to per month.
There are a lot of options they could consider. But instead all we seem to be getting is some corporatist mythology asserting that unlimited spending is a social good and that lies are welcome as a form of free speech.
