So, while we’re being told a historically unpopular and reviled president might get re-elected because of the Electoral College, let’s also talk about how it’s past time to get rid of that antiquated system that was invented to empower slave holders in the first place.
This coverage is, in part, why media is so frustrating. You get clicks by touting anxiety. Yes, Trump could win. Yes, the Electoral College advantages white identity candidates. So. Let’s also frame it from that perspective, that it’s madness that we still use it.
Instead, coverage just presents this antiquated, intentionally racist structure as unquestionable and permanent. Why not tell the whole story? Why not present this as evidence of a destructive, unfair, corrupted system? It’s only the truth.
Trump does well in the Electoral College because it’s designed for him. It was out there to advantage paranoid, embattled whites, particularly paranoid, embattled, particularly paranoid whites with a white supremacy worldview and an obsession with maintaining power.
That’s objective, historical fact. And yet, it’s just presented, time and again, as if the Electoral College is a rational force of nature. Like it should never be questioned or disturbed. That’s how we get here, this ridiculous respect for problematic tradition.
