THREAD: Today there’s a lot of reasons to be concerned of possible massacres in #Haiti. In the past few days, armed individuals sometimes accompanied with police have been actively attacking popular neighborhoods that are a part of anti-government protests.
Some gangs have recently received brand new guns and there’s a campaign of intimidation underway against key anti-government activists who actively engage in organizing roadblocks and protests.
Here’s some high risk areas under extreme police presence with cases of armed men circulating in police cars. Solino, Delmas 24, Fort National, Bel Air, St Marc, Carrefour Marasa, Aviation, Grand Rue, Delmas 47, Ave Pouplard, various neighborhood in Cap Haitien.
As we approach the first anniversary of the #LaSaline Massacre, we’re seeing the same movements we saw prior to that attack and after the uprising against the government last year on October 17. It’s also worth noting that’s the gangs are out of control.
Using gangs to intimidate people or to carry out terrible acts of violence is one of the dirtiest trick in Haitian politics. Also some gangs who were under control of some public officials stopped receiving money from them which makes some of them even more dangerous.
If we’re ignoring what is going on in #Haiti today after well documented human rights abuses by the police and othre groups, another massacre is possible. Remember the government has still yet to recognize there was a massacre despite reports from UN and more.
