Immigration is how the hard of thinking excuse the savage cuts in our services. Immigration is something we need to invest in, along with our services and that includes reversing the misery of cuts already suffered. UK should also be looking at one off wealth taxes ->
X : By "hard of thinking" do you mean poor?
Me : No. I started on a council estate. I went to Cambridge. I can tell you that despite enormous pressures it creates, many of the smartest people I know live in poverty. I'm talking about the chinless wonders with blue rosettes.
... if you want to release the potential of our country (a favourite phrase of Boris) then you need to invest in Sure Start (as per Labour), you need to bring down the barriers that hold people back, tackle the inequality and stop pandering to the privately educated & entitled.
X : I thought you were about reducing waste?
Me : I'm always about reducing waste. There's a lot waste (more in the private sector than Gov) and yes, it should be reduced and re-invested in people. Austerity went way beyond this, it was a political dogma and a nasty one at that.
Me : Don't get me wrong, there was some good stuff done under Cameron and more particularly Francis Maude e.g. GDS, spend control. A real focus on challenging the ridiculous sums being spent on management consultants, large IT suppliers, large IT projects etc.
... this stuff was positive and should be done but alas it seems to have been diminished. Austerity went far beyond "let us spend our money wisely to invest in our people" and became a mix of victimisation, dogma and excuses for tax breaks ...
... take Universal Credit. For fraud and error, they wanted to spend £180M on the most cock-eyed big consultancy project that it has been my misfortune to come across. They spent vast sums on specification documents. A real shocker. This is the waste you attack, not Sure Start.
There are many Conservatives I like, true one nation types which is an idea not far from old Labour. There was a lot of good under Cameron but an awful lot more harm. Boris ... that party has lurched further to the right. Trump 2.0. and dropping the whip from Ken Clarke? Bah.
