Excited to hear @D_R_Williams1 talking about race and inequity in healthcare.

Although immigrants are healthier than their non-immigrant counterparts, “The longer immigrants stay in the US, the worse their health becomes.”

Individual racism: When black & white men tried to cross the street in Portland, black men had to wait >30% longer as 2x as many cars passed them by compared to white men.

Institutional racism: Black ppl have to wait longer to vote (almost 2x as long as white ppl).

Racial inequities are not acts of God. They are not random. They are the result of racism—the outcomes are exactly what the system was designed to produce.

Are things getting better over time, you ask? There has been NO decline in discrimination seen in audit studies in the US over the past 25 years.

Discrimination doesn’t just affect opportunities and career trajectories. It also is associated with negative health consequences (see slide).

“Discrimination is an independent predictor of premature death.”

The Devine solution showed that counter-stereotyping, individuation, perspective-taking, and stereotype replacement had durable effects on implicit bias.

Three excellent quotes at the end of the talk—if these don’t motivate you, I’m not sure what will!

1. “There is nothing so unfair as the equal treatment of unequal people.”

#AAMC19
2. “True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it understands that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.”

The edifice badly needs restructuring.

3. “Each time a man stands up for an ideal...or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”

We can all be part of the wave to wash out oppression.
And I nabbed a quick photo at the end! Thanks for an amazing talk, @D_R_Williams1! #AAMC19
