The @guardian featured an opinion piece about how the #GDPR is failing to protect privacy.

Some may begrudge the @guardian for these practices, but the economics are straightforward. Journalism is expensive. Most research finds that cookies double or even triple the ad revenue that publishers receive. 4/

Our research of 28K top sites shows that use of third party domains fell 1 week post-GDPR (-15%) but returned to pre-GPDR levels by the end of 2018. Our data on the @guardian shows a similar decline 1 week post-GDPR, but a *doubling* in third party domains by the end of 2018. 6/
Our research also shows websites were more likely to drop smaller web tech vendors (identified by 3rd party domains) in favor of larger ones (particularly Google & FB-owned vendors), which increased the relative concentration of the vendor market. 7/7

Google just released a more details about the study showing *publisher revenue* falls 52% without a cookie. They run an experiment disabling cookies for a random sample of users on Google Ad Manager's top 500 publishers in terms of programmatic revenue. 1/

Now, we see that results vary by publisher (below). While the average publisher’s revenue falls by 52%, the median is 64%. Very few publishers see a loss less than 20% while a large number experience losses exceeding 70% (!). 2/
Despite precise aggregate estimates (95% CI <1%), the individual site estimates are statistically imprecise for smaller sites. Focusing on the top 200 sites reveals less dispersion. Now, only a 1 of 200 sites loses less than 10% of revenue. 3/

Caster Semenya is a record-making South African runner. She was thrown into the spotlight for having higher than average natural testosterone levels, and traits that some critiqued as being not 'feminine' enough, as if there is one way to look like and be a woman.
Caster has never used the word 'intersex' to describe herself, and her medical information was leaked because of the scale of her case. We want to acknowledge Caster's violated privacy, while we express outrage over the discrimination her case represents.

1. I wonder how specific the historical, political context is in which this research takes place. It is the height of neoliberalism, where there is almost a perfect opposition between neoliberalism and populism (some exceptions, like Lula).
2. While effects are not solely related to left populists in Latin America, they are the key driver. At same time, left non-populists in Latin America, like Lula, who also significantly reduced inequality, are minority of non-neoliberal non-populists.

1. Although triggering Article 7 does not mean kicking Hungary out of EU (more below), it is starting with the "nuclear option".
2. Orbán and Fidesz have been creating an "illiberal state" since regaining power in 2010. That is 8 years of undermining checks and balances, recreating institutions and filling them with cronies, and creating a kleptocracy on Russian model.
