The @guardian featured an opinion piece about how the #GDPR is failing to protect privacy.
The piece serves as an unintentional object lesson of the same. THREAD 1/
theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
Here is the excerpt where the author decries prevailing opt-out practices alongside the Guardian’s consent menu doing the same.
Note: The @ICOnews states that this menu is not #GDPR compliant (“NO" should be as easy as "YES"). 2/
When I VPN as a French user The Guardian interacts with 42 third party domains (listed below) and loads 122 third party cookies.
Note: All this arises without my opt-in consent. 3/
Some may begrudge the @guardian for these practices, but the economics are straightforward. Journalism is expensive. Most research finds that cookies double or even triple the ad revenue that publishers receive. 4/
Nor is the @guardian unique. Replace it with @nytimes and you get the same thing, which the NYT admits in this excellent opinion piece by @tim_libert (developer of the webxray tool I’m using) 5/

Our research of 28K top sites shows that use of third party domains fell 1 week post-GDPR (-15%) but returned to pre-GPDR levels by the end of 2018. Our data on the @guardian shows a similar decline 1 week post-GDPR, but a *doubling* in third party domains by the end of 2018. 6/
Our research also shows websites were more likely to drop smaller web tech vendors (identified by 3rd party domains) in favor of larger ones (particularly Google & FB-owned vendors), which increased the relative concentration of the vendor market. 7/7
