Quite often, reporting touches upon the biographies of these witnesses in passing, if at all, in the breezy form of a CV.

It doesn’t do justice to the world-historical scope of their life stories, escaping persecution by the Nazis and the Soviets to find succor in free society.
Without truly appreciating those details, an important part of the impeachment inquiry that we have been watching unfold will be absolutely lost on the public.
These witnesses, time and again, affirm the importance of rule of law and an open and free society because they and their families are all too intimately familiar with their opponents in countries that lack both.

Chilling moment from Yovanovich's testimony, as she recalls learning that Trump called her "bad news" in a phone call with Zelensky.

"The color drained from my face," she said. "I even had a physical reaction. Even now, words kind of fail me."
Pressed on it, Yovanovich continues that she was "shocked, appalled, devastated" that the POTUS would talk about "any ambassador like that."

"And it was me," she added.
"It didn’t sound good," Yovanovich said. "It sounded like a threat."
