I think Johnson may be taking President Trump's definition of a trade deal, as in anything he wants it to mean.
Ask Johnson what his 'trade deal' would include for the car industry, or UK services, or any other sector with significant UK-EU trade. My thread yesterday for those who want to know why real trade agreements take time to negotiate.
How about "Mr Johnson, can you guarantee UK built cars will get identical access to the EU market as now?" or "Will EU fishing fleets get access to UK waters as part of this trade deal?"

You can write an FTA in a lunchtime, but negotiating one to maximum benefit can take years.

Agree with this 100%. Becoming increasingly concerned about the interpretation in the UK of how the EU works even among experts - that always comes back to some notion they should be particularly nice to us, and more fool them if not. We need a lot more realism.
Even the most basic basic fact - as a non member state UK opinion will matter less than the smallest member state to the EU - is rarely acknowledged. The EU doesn't have a long term vision of the future relationship, but that's better than the UKs unachievable vision.
Oh and it really is bizarre that four years ago criticising the EU for being more concerned with unity than trade was a Eurosceptic view, now saying this is somehow unpatriotic and EU loving...

My latest on why existing alignment between EU and UK will not help deliver a quick trade agreement. In short, because the UK doesn't want to maintain the existing alignment, and so we get intoi trade-offs... prospectmagazine.co.uk/economics-and-…
But also consider this - in a trade agreement where the previous relationship was WTO rules both sides / business probably already know what barriers they want to remove. But in the case of future EU / UK trade relations neither side knows what specifically they want to change

Don't agree with much of what @anandMenon1 writes here - in particular I think we have to see a lot of the EU approach to Brexit in terms of responding to the UKs failure to realise we couldn't retain trade benefits of EU membership while leaving
It's also perfectly normal for the Commission to lead negotiations with external countries, as the UK will be, and prioritise maintaining unity among diverse Member States, who were heavily involved in the process. Also to put EU interests first.
EU inflexibility in approach to external negotiations is by design and has generally brought them results, if not always ones liked by those on the other side of negotiations. UK has to show rather more understanding if we're to get the relationship we want.
