This will be a little thread using an article about the Greek Settlers of Central Florida, who were likely the first Orthodox population in the Continental United States.
Why did this even happen?

After the Seven Years War, Britain claimed East and West Florida from Spain while the Spanish border was moved to the Mississippi, as a clause from the treaty, the Spanish were largely vacated. And there were few people who could populate another colony
Menorca was an English possession as well during this period proving a good staging ground to funnel Greeks.

The Levant Company’s competition with the Greek traders lead the British to recruit Peloponnesian Klephts instead of calling on Agean ports, where they were blocked.
Gradually though, he was able to go to Asia Minor after recruiting the Peloponnese, and took in an additional few hundred at Smyrna, which would provide the name for the colony of New Smyrna.
As Turnbull was recruiting for the Florida colony the end of a century long exile of the Cretans in Corsica, who settled had been settled be the Genoese to have a friendly population on that island.

The Corsican hand over to the French necessitated a new home.
The Greeks served under term of indenture, a common practice in those days, but the actual terms have been lost. This was the largest single population to start a colony to that point with 1400 Greeks setting up a permanent presence in Florida initially at the New Smyrna colony.
