@PyotrNemets @akarlin88 Vernadsky’s political history of Russian and his single volume cultural history of Russia are great places to start.

I’m building a library as well but single volume histories of Russia Vernadsky is your guy, and his unfinished ten volume on Russia.

@PyotrNemets @akarlin88 This list has almost every good Russian single volume and many good multi volumes on a general overview.

In addition Vernadsky’s colleague, Mikhail Karpovich, a reformed Right SR who grew more right over time, wrote an excellent one volume on empire.

@PyotrNemets @akarlin88 Mikhail Karpovich was to write the last four volumes of Vernadsky’s that was to be the magnum opus of English Emigre literature. As it stands Vernadsky’s 6 completed volumes up till 1689 are the best medieval history of Russia not in translation.
@PyotrNemets @akarlin88 Post Petrine the last two volumes of Klyuchevsky is good for the empire until Nicholas I from Nicholas it becomes more difficult, early Riasanovsky did a lot of justice in early editions of History of Russia, and Official Nationality of Nicholas I.
@PyotrNemets @akarlin88 If you follow the post on SALO, you’ll see the available monographs on the era continue to expand, economic, diplomatic, military, cultural, and philosophical overviews have to be consulted to reconstruct view given by Shiller’s Nikolai I for example. Or rare books like this.
@PyotrNemets @akarlin88 Starting with Alexander III, there is so much distortion and lying about the economy, the people, the country overall, and the political actors (I.e. Pobednotsev and Dmitri Tolstoy) that the truth about the reign becomes very difficult to find. The liberals had huge grudges.
@PyotrNemets @akarlin88 And they also had huge culpability in the victory of Bolshevism because they grew to greedy to quickly, at precisely the time their education should have told them to withdraw.

Milyukov, Kerensky, and the Paris Orient in particular are very guilty for the way things turned out.
