ICE released its 2019 report on enforcement activity.

While overall removals increased due to a record number of illegal arrivals at the southwest border, removals from the interior declined by 10%.

ICE's interior caseload is primarily criminal aliens:

- 86% of ICE arrests were aliens convicted or charged with crimes

- 91% of the removals were criminals.

Among the aliens arrested by ICE:

- 1,923 charged or convicted of homicide
- 5,061 charged or convicted of sexual assault
- 10,278 charged or convicted of weapons offenses
- 67,730 charged or convicted of serious drug crimes

The president's "Report to Congress on Proposed Refugee Admissions for FY 2020", released last month, provides us with useful information on the United States' humanitarian approach to displaced populations.

In FY 2020, the United States is expected to receive:

- 368k refugees and asylum claims
- 350k new asylum claimants
- 18k resettled refugees under the new refugee admissions ceiling

The estimated cost for refugee resettlement totaled $976 million in FY 2019 and should amount to $892 million in FY 2020.

Each of the 18,000 refugees to be resettled in FY 2020 is expected to cost American taxpayers $49,555.

2. We first thought up this piece as a simple addition to our annual "World If" magazine supplement, but it soon ballooned into something larger. It seemed that nobody had suggested a satisfactory answer to the question of what would happen in US politics if everyone turned out.
3. We hypothesized that the US would drift more to the left under universal voting, but by how much? Though non-voters are more diverse & thus left-leaning than voters, there are plenty of working-class whites who don't turn out either. Our math says they make up ~50% of adults.

In AL & MI, a $15 federal minimum wage by 2024 -> ratio of minimum to median wage of 0.8

What are employment effects of minimum wages at these high levels?
We don’t know – current state ratios much lower - unchartered territory!
But within states, many low wage counties already have very high relative minimum wages.

Ex: parts of agricultural CA, TX: the minimum wage approaches 80% of the median wage.

2. These estimates are significant because if people choose to not respond to the #2020Census themselves, that would affect "not only citizenship statistics but also other demographic statistics and the population coverage of the count itself," @uscensusbureau researchers write.
3. If you don't respond to #2020Census, @uscensusbureau workers will likely visit your home. If they can't reach someone after multiple tries, they'll have to ask a neighbor or turn to existing records for answers that are probably less accurate than info reported by household.
