The basic dilemma for the UK: accept being bound by EU rules or accept dramatically reduced ability to compete in EU goods/services markets.
Johnson’s refusal to admit that that choice has to be made will not long survive the election: and the choice is likely to be even more divisive (because critical to GB business and voters) as the divisions over the NI backstop.
And also to end in the same way: buckling under a solution more or less imposed by the EU, with the odd figleaf if Johnson is lucky.
And see this thread: it is not in EU interest to compromise on enforceable level playing field standards if the UK is to have *any* close trading arrangement/FTA with the EU.
Indeed, any such compromise would be impossible for EU politicians to sell to their own constituencies: allowing UK goods/services to compete on anything > WTO basis while UK able to undercut of regulation/subsidies is a hopeless sell to EU voters/parliaments.
